30 types and varieties of calla lilies, planting and care in open ground, growing in the garden

Black callas are stunning flowers.
They fascinate with their black color, elegance, and sophistication. The flowers are not actually true black, their true color is maroon or deep purple, but this dark, rare color for flowers brings them closer to black. Calla is a dioecious plant, an angiosperm, aroid species. The flower is native to South Africa and grows near bodies of water. The height ranges from 50 to 100 cm.

Black callas have more than two dozen varieties. However, the structure of all flowers is the same.

The best varieties of thornless blackberries

The concept of the best variety is very relative, for some people the taste is important, for others they want to get the maximum harvest, while for others their grandchildren come only in June and even a handful of berries during this period will be enough to call the variety the very best. Of course, the best varieties should have a great taste, beautiful bunches of berries that benefit either in quantity or size of the fruit, but there are also many such varieties at the moment. However, not all varieties can successfully bear fruit in our country with its severe frosts, so in this article we will consider the most popular varieties of thornless blackberries from the point of view of the possibility of their cultivation in Russia.

The earliest

With the onset of spring, gardeners pay a lot of attention to the earliest varieties of blackberries, which produce the first harvest in early June:

  • Natchez. The large and beautiful berries of this variety are valued for their unique taste, which tasters unanimously give the highest score. Features of the variety are high yield and early fruiting.
  • Columbia Star. It is pleased with its high resistance to disease, large-fruited fruit and the possibility of automated harvesting. Tolerates drought well.
  • Loch Tay. One of the sweetest varieties. Notable for its high yield and drought resistance. Berries with a high content of vitamin C.

Thornless varieties for the Moscow region

In the Moscow region, any blackberry needs shelter for the winter, but even if protection is provided, not all varieties are tested at negative temperatures. In addition, you want to choose a variety with excellent taste, high yield, resistance to shade, drought, diseases and pests.

Popular varieties among summer residents near Moscow:

  • Thornfree. One of the first thornless varieties, bred by American breeders in the middle of the last century. In one and a half months of fruiting, the bush produces 22 kg. berries weighing 5-7 g. each. The taste varies from sweet-sour to fresh-sweet at different stages of ripening.
  • Navajo. The variety is not large-fruited, but for 30 years it has held the record for the number of berries from one bush. Gardeners are attracted by its unpretentiousness to growing conditions.
  • Loch Ness. Considered one of the best varieties for commercial cultivation. Notable for its beautiful large berries, which do not lose their excellent qualities during transportation.
  • Black Satin. Very tasty berries for fresh consumption and canning, high yield, an average of 25 kg. from the bush. The ripe berries are very beautiful - black, with a glossy sheen.
  • Triple Crown. Suitable for industrial cultivation. Large “currant” berries with a very interesting taste, reminiscent of plum and cherry at the same time.
  • Buckingham Tyberry. The thornless hybrid of blackberries and Tayberry raspberries combines the best qualities of these two crops - taste, aroma, and beneficial properties. The weight of one berry can reach 15 grams.
  • Chester Thornless. Does not require special care; flexible, short shoots do not need to be trimmed or tied to trellises. Berries of excellent taste and good transportability.

Repairers

Remontant varieties of thornless blackberries are not yet widespread. For many years, gardeners rejoiced at the Ruben variety, whose thorns cause virtually no trouble when picking berries, and then disappear altogether.

In 2009, Arkansas scientists managed to develop the first variety of remontant blackberry without thorns: Prime Arc Freedom. It pleases gardeners with beautiful giant fruits with a magical taste, however, in central Russia it can only be grown under a film.

In what cases is it necessary to consult a doctor if black stool is detected?

  • Black stools are accompanied by vomiting and/or fever.
  • A history of gastric and/or duodenal ulcers.
  • Blood tests reveal iron deficiency anemia.
  • Presence of liver cirrhosis and (or) hepatitis.
  • Recently there was severe vomiting, especially if it was caused by drinking alcohol (possible Mallory-Weiss syndrome).
  • A history of intestinal or stomach cancer in the person himself or his relatives.
  • If this is a child, and he has become restless, whiny, refuses to eat or is too lethargic.

Subsequent care of the crop

Caring for Black Satin blackberries is more difficult than other varieties due to the need to constantly form a bush and the problems caused by thick, rigid shoots.

Growing principles

Growing Black Satin blackberries without a garter is impossible. Although its lashes are devoid of thorns, they are very long, without shaping or pruning, they first grow upward, then descend to the ground and take root. With the powerful shoot-forming ability of the variety, impenetrable thickets can be obtained within a season. It is very difficult to tidy up a neglected blackberry tree, since the branches are thick, stubborn and easily break.

Black Satin blackberry shoots need to be trained to be placed on a trellis when they reach a length of 30-35 cm. The lashes are bent to the ground and secured with staples. They are lifted onto the support after reaching 1.0-1.2 m.

Necessary activities

Blackberry is a moisture-loving crop. The Black Satin variety is extremely productive, therefore, it needs more water, especially during flowering and berry formation.

Other varieties of blackberries are recommended to start feeding in the third year after planting. Black Satin quickly grows green mass and forms many side shoots and berries. Feeding begins after a year:

  1. In the spring, immediately after melting or directly on the snow, give the first nitrogen fertilizer.
  2. At the beginning of flowering, blackberries are fertilized with a complete mineral complex.
  3. Next, once a month (until August) the plant is fed with a diluted mullein infusion (1:10) or green fertilizer (1:4) with the addition of ash.
  4. In August and September, the bushes are fertilized with phosphorus and potassium. Potassium monophosphate is highly soluble in water and gives excellent results.
  5. Throughout the season, foliar feeding should be done, they are also called quick. It is good to mix fertilizers specially designed for these purposes, humate, epin or zircon and a chelate complex. The latter prevents chlorosis and nourishes Black Satin blackberries with microelements necessary for plant health and a good harvest.

It is better to replace loosening with mulching with acidic peat or humus. Harrowing is carried out after placing the shoots on supports, harvesting and before sheltering for the winter.

Shrub pruning

Black Satin blackberries need to be pruned regularly. For fruiting, leave 5-6 strong shoots from last year. The side lashes are constantly shortened to 40-45 cm, weak and thin ones are cut out completely.

Shoots that have finished bearing fruit are removed before sheltering for the winter. In the spring, 5-6 of the best lashes are left, weak lashes, frozen or broken ends are cut off.

The leaves of the Black Satin variety also need to be rationed. During the ripening of the crop, those that shade the fruit clusters are torn off. Just don't overdo it! Blackberries need foliage for nutrition and the formation of chlorophyll.

Advice! In the first year after planting Black Satin blackberries, it is recommended to pick off all the flowers.

Preparing for winter

We will assume that you have trained young shoots to climb onto a trellis, as described in the chapter “Principles of Growing.” Before winter, all that remains is to cut out the canes that have finished bearing fruit at the root, remove the annual growth from the support, and secure it to the ground. Then you need to cover the blackberries for the winter with spruce branches, agrofibre and cover them with soil. You can build special tunnels.

Important! You need to open blackberries in the spring before the buds begin to bloom.

Diseases and pests: methods of control and prevention

Like other blackberry varieties, Black Satin gets sick and is rarely affected by pests. If you do not plant raspberries, strawberries and nightshade crops next to it, spring and autumn treatment with copper-containing preparations will be sufficient.

The problem for Black Satin blackberries is gray rot of the berries. To prevent disease, fruits must be removed as they ripen every 3 days.

What can help differentiate the likely causes of dark-colored stools?

  • General health - if the cause is bleeding, then symptoms due to blood loss are more likely to appear - weakness, pale skin, sticky sweat, epigastric pain. If the cause of such coloring of stool is food or medication, then general health, as a rule, remains normal.
  • The duration of this symptom - if the cause is the intake of certain foods, then the stool takes on a normal color after eliminating “coloring” foods after 1-2 days. With bleeding and long-term use of “coloring” medications, the stool may be black for a long time. If the reason was due to taking medications, then the usual coloration of the stool appears after they are discontinued, which is done by the doctor at the end of the course of treatment.

Feeding

When growing black calla lilies, it is important to fertilize correctly. Typically, the plant is fed two months a year: March and April.

The rest of the time, no fertilizing is applied. Although, in order for the flower to bloom all year round, it is recommended to fertilize more often. For this purpose, the plant is fed twice a month.

For calla lilies, you can use compost by adding it directly to the soil. You can use fertilizers diluted in water. As the latter, use any liquid fertilizer intended for ornamental flowering plants or special fertilizer for calla lilies.

Sometimes burns may occur on the edges of the leaves. This indicates that the fertilizer was selected incorrectly and the plant is overfed. Burns are caused by excess nitrogen. The less light a plant receives, the more nutrients it will consume from the soil.

Watering black callas

In addition, black callas love moisture. Therefore, they should be watered abundantly. This fact should also be taken into account when choosing a landing site. To get a flower garden of incredible beauty, you need to combine plants, creating contrast. Ideally black callas look good next to white flowers. This will give the garden more mystery and mystery.

Planting and care in open ground

Planting of prepared calla tubers (preparing a tuber for planting in the ground is the same as for indoor cultivation) is carried out in early May. The tubers are planted to a depth of 7-10 centimeters, at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other; after planting, water the soil generously. The first shoots appear 2-3 weeks after planting. During this time, the soil does not need to be watered; the moisture added to the soil during planting is sufficient.

Planting calla lilies and caring for them is impossible without the main components:

  • Lighting. Zantedeschia naturally grows in marshy, shady areas with well-fertilized soil. In the garden, choose darkened areas for planting; if we are talking about an indoor flower, then the north-west windows will be the ideal place.
  • Moisture. Plants require good soil moisture and frequent spraying.
  • Feeding. Regular application of fertilizers. Zantedeschia loves well-fertilized soil. Apply fertilizers every 2-3 weeks, this will provide you with beautiful and abundant flowering, no worse than in the flowerbeds of Dutch flower growers.
  • Warm. Do not forget that the “African woman” loves warmth, so the air temperature should be at least 14 degrees, and the daylight hours should be at least 10 hours.

To grow beautiful calla lilies at home, you don’t have to be a professional gardener; despite its exotic nature, this flower is not too demanding to care for. Caring for rhizomatous callas is not difficult.

How to grow beautiful callas in a pot? Remember, calla rehmann loves spacious pots; as soon as the calla leaves turn yellow, this is a sign for an imminent replanting. The rhizome of calla lilies grows quickly.

Houseplants calla lilies bloom, like orchids, several times a year in the fall and spring. The intensive flowering period for garden calla lilies planted in a pot can last from November to May, provided that you have selected the right fertilizers for calla lilies. Feeding the calla plant should be done every 5-6 waterings. If the soil in the flowerpot is not acidic enough, you can slightly acidify it by watering the flower with a weak solution of vinegar or water with lemon juice.

Callas grown in a pot during the warm period will feel great in open ground. Plant callas, like other plants, in prepared soil. Often, after planting in the open air, zantedeschias begin to turn green and grow profusely. In autumn, calla lilies need to be dug up before the onset of cold weather.

Peculiarities

The selection of natural calla lilies has provided gardeners with a wide variety of flowers of different sizes and colors. Plants are grown to decorate landscapes, interiors, and for cutting. Flowers look great in mono bouquets and various mixed compositions.

An undoubted advantage of growing zantedeschia is that flower growers call it decorative, serving as a decoration for any area. The elegant appearance of the flower and bright color always attract attention. Compositions made from calla lilies are considered a worthy accompaniment to any event at the highest level.

Among the disadvantages of cultivation, difficulties in storing and annual planting of tubers are often cited. In addition, novice gardeners do not always determine the necessary care criteria, and therefore do not immediately achieve full flowering. But those who have adapted to the capricious nature of Zantedeschia are sure that all the efforts are worth its magnificent flowers.

Some peoples consider feces a symbol of death, while others consider it a symbol of purity and innocence. In some countries they are brought to funerals, and in others they are given as gifts for weddings. Botanists are sure that to prevent flowers from causing trouble, when caring for them at home or in the garden, you should not forget about the toxicity of the plant’s sap. It is best to protect flower beds with beautiful callas from children and pets.

Reproduction, planting and replanting of red lilies

Before planting, you need to prepare fertile soil and choose a sunny, windless place. Although some species can grow well in partial shade, it is better to clarify the preferences of the selected variety in advance and find a suitable place in the flowerbed

It is also necessary to pay attention to the variety’s need for replanting.

Most often, lilies are planted from mid-September, but spring and early summer are also suitable for planting. Bulbs for planting must meet the following requirements:

  • be quite large and “meaty”;
  • the scales should have a healthy appearance and not be overdried;
  • without stains, mucus, rot.

In order for the bulb to take root and sprout, it is advisable to follow these simple instructions:

  • treat lily bulbs with Fundazol to protect against fungus, and then with Epin, a growth stimulator;
  • carefully remove dead scales and roots from the bulb;
  • After planting, the bulb must be sprinkled with soil and a special granular fertilizer must be added.

Lily planting scheme

In gardening, there are several options for planting lilies. The choice of scheme primarily depends on the height of the selected variety. For short species, a “three-line” scheme is used: between the bulbs and rows - 10-15 cm, between rows - 70 cm. For medium-sized varieties, a two-line scheme is used: between the bulbs and rows there should be 15-25 cm, and the rows should be at a distance of 70 cm apart. There is also a one-line scheme, in which the bulbs are planted at a distance of 5-15 cm, and there can be 50 cm between rows.

Replanting plants also requires compliance with certain rules. Flowers need to be replanted on average every five years to avoid crushing of flowers. For the transplant to be successful, you must do the following:

  • cut the stems at the surface of the soil;
  • Carefully dig up the bulb and remove dried scales;
  • then divide the onion into shares and keep them in a solution of potassium permanganate;
  • make holes, carefully plant the bulbs in them so as not to break the root system;
  • sprinkle sawdust or peat on top.

Transplanting lilies

Lily propagation occurs in several ways, and each gardener can choose the most convenient one for himself:

  1. Dividing the bulb - in the fall the bulb is dug up, small parts are separated and planted in a pre-selected and prepared place.
  2. Reproduction by scales is especially popular. About a third of the scales are separated from the bulb, which are then planted in the ground and covered with sawdust or sand. With systematic watering, these scales produce roots.
  3. Separation of children from the root part of the stem.
  4. Reproduction by stem bulbs, which sometimes fall off and take root in the ground.
  5. Propagation by cuttings - parts of a stem with a dormant bud or stems with leaves. The cuttings are planted in the ground at a shallow depth. When so-called bulbs form on the stems, they are removed and planted in separate containers. Over time, the transplanted bulbs germinate.
  6. Propagation by seeds requires a lot of time. In early spring, seeds are planted in containers until the first shoots appear. Then they dive and stay warm until winter, and then overwinter at a temperature of +4-6 degrees. If the seedlings successfully survived the winter, they are planted in a permanent place. With this method of propagation, the plant begins to bloom only after 5 or even 7 years of life in a permanent place.

Growing in an open area

Callas are a versatile plant; they can be planted both indoors and outdoors. The success of cultivation depends on where the flower is planted in the garden. The flower is thermophilic; the ideal place is considered to be a well-lit area where there are no drafts or strong winds. If the plant is exposed to direct sunlight throughout the day, the leaves need to be shaded during peak solar activity, otherwise they are at risk of being burned. Calla lilies should only be planted in fertile soil with a slightly acidic reaction.

Important! It is allowed to plant the plant in clay soil; before planting, peat and sand are added to it in equal proportions.

Calla lily tubers are planted in early May, the weather is warm outside, the bulbs grow quickly, and the plant begins to grow actively.

Attention! Bulbs are planted after the end of frost; a decrease in temperature does not reflect well on the condition of the flower.

The rhizome is planted in a hole about 10 centimeters deep, the distance between plants is about 30 cm. The soil is not compacted, and the bulbs are not pressed into it, they are simply placed in the planting hole and sprinkled with soil. Some gardeners practice germination before planting. The tubers are placed in a flowerpot, providing care for them. As soon as warm days arrive, the seedlings are transplanted into the garden.

Calla is a perennial herbaceous plant with a tuberous rhizome. The leaves are large, arrow-shaped, on long petioles, lush green, shiny, and in some varieties the leaf blades are decorated with silver-white translucent spots. It has a single inflorescence typical of all aroids in the form of a creamy-yellow spadix, surrounded by a large funnel-shaped leaf-veil, on a long peduncle. The color of the bedspread is varied: white, yellow, pink. Interspecific hybrids also have a cream cover, and through the efforts of breeders, pink shades have been brought to carmine and lilac.

Calla Black Magic /Zantedeschia Black Magic/

The variety of this bright yellow calla is called Black Magic / that is / Black Magic / at first glance it is not clear why, yellow color and black magic. But if you look at the flower from above, the secret of this original variety will immediately be revealed.

Because in the depths of the funnel of the yellow blanket, we will see a dark purple almost black spot, attracting attention and bewitching with its beauty

Calla Black Magic is quite large, the height of an adult plant is 40-70 cm, it “spreads” up to a meter. Large bright yellow flowers and very large leaves, green with white specks, are quite noticeable, that is, they can be distinguished from other varieties. The calla flower retains its decorative effect for a month, and those growing in the garden for one and a half. Although calla lilies are an exotic plant for us, they can be grown in the garden and at home, as a houseplant.

Yellow corner

The bright yellow flower is one of the most popular flowers of the Calla Elliott species. Its sunny, sometimes lemony hue can compete with many bright flowers of this variety, and the emerald leaves are considered one of the most beautiful among other varieties. Note that varieties such as Florex Gold, Sunshine, Pearl von Zweibrücken, Pearl von Stuttgart and Schene Zweibrückerin can also boast shades of yellow.

Care

In the first days of planting, water the plant; on hot days, watering is doubled. It is necessary to ensure that there is no stagnation of water. If you are planting a plant in the garden, you can plant the flower near a pond.

Black calla needs properly organized feeding. Fertilizers are applied in March and April. Fertilize the plant with compost, add it directly to the soil, or dilute it with water. For a flower in a pot, special organic and mineral complexes for indoor plants are used. After two months after planting, the plant begins to bloom until autumn.

What to do if calla lilies don't bloom? There are several reasons:

  • weak root system;
  • excess nitrogen fertilizers;
  • insufficient amount of sunlight;
  • cramped pot.

How to make calla lilies bloom? First, you need to identify the problem; if the problem is in the flowerpot, replanting will help. The application of phosphorus-potassium fertilizers will help speed up flowering. The flower also needs winter rest. During this period, the stems and leaves die off; place the flowerpot with the flower in a cool place until spring. Water the plant periodically to prevent the bulb from drying out. After resting, the calla will bloom and delight its owners with abundant flowering.

Reproduction

The peculiarity of this exotic flower is that it is easily propagated by seeds, dividing the bush and tubers.

Propagation by seeds is mainly used by breeders; growing in this way is a labor-intensive process. First you need to collect the seeds, then place them on a tray, cover with a damp paper towel, and place in a warm place. After the seeds germinate, sow in a container with soil.

Growing by dividing bushes and tubers. In the fall, the plant is dug up, the root collar is trimmed, and placed in a pot. Tubers can be purchased at a specialized store; they should not be rotten or damaged. A healthy tuber resembles a potato in appearance.

Diseases and pests

If not properly cared for, black calla lilies are attacked by pests and infectious diseases. Infection is indicated by yellow, dull, crowded and dried leaves.

Often the plant suffers from anthracnose and brown spots appear on the leaves. Over time, they grow, a red rim appears on the edge of the leaf, and mold forms in the center. The development of the disease is affected by increased air temperature and excess moisture. You can improve the health of the flower by removing all infected leaves and treating the calla lilies with a fungicide. Before use, you should read the description of the drug and study the instructions.

Calla suffers from attacks from the following pests:

  1. The red spider mite sucks the juice from the leaves and stem. The appearance of small white dots on the leaf blade indicates that a mite has settled on the plant. Over time, the flower is enveloped in a thin web. To combat the pest, drugs are used - acaricides and insectoacaricides.
  2. Aphids also feed on plant sap, the leaves turn yellow and curl. The flower stops blooming and becomes covered with sugar clots. Aphids entail the appearance of other insects - ants. Chemicals help in the fight against pests: Decis, Actellik, Inta-vir, Neoron, Aktara.

Calla does not bloom

It often happens that black calla does not bloom. This is a consequence of improper care, namely:

  • improper insufficient watering;
  • if the plant is planted in a cramped pot;
  • if there is no rest period: in order to gain strength, the plant may stop growing and blooming;
  • incorrectly selected fertilizer, lack of fertilizing.

In order for the plant to enjoy long and abundant flowering, it must be constantly watered. This procedure is carried out every other day.

In order for a flower to develop properly, it needs to be provided with a large volume of soil. Narrow small pots result in calla lilies not blooming. The diameter should be selected so that it is slightly larger than the crown of foliage. When children are born, they must be separated.

In winter, the calla should be provided with rest. At this time, the above-ground part of the plant dies. The pot with calla lilies is placed in a cool place. To prevent the bulb from drying out, it must be watered periodically. If a flower is not given rest, it will not bloom.

Diseases and their treatment

If you care for callas incorrectly, and also choose the wrong soil, then there will be a high probability of diseases occurring.

Anthracnose is a disease of fungal origin. It is quite common in these flowers. Signs:

  • brown spots, enlarge over time, the edges become red;
  • mold appears;
  • leaves dry out and curl;
  • the stem weakens.

Causes:

  • inappropriate temperature;
  • high air humidity;
  • abundant watering.

Treatment:

  • remove affected leaves;
  • reduce watering;
  • remove from heating appliances;
  • treat with antifungal agents.

Powdery mildew appears in flowers already affected by the fungus. It manifests itself by such signs as a white coating, which quickly grows and eventually covers the entire plant. After a short time, the leaves begin to turn black, and then they die.

How to fight:

  • remove affected parts;
  • treat with antifungal agents (once every 7 days, 3 weeks);
  • reduce watering.

This disease can also appear in dry soil.

See below for the rules for planting tubers.

Chameleon

Like the mammal of the same name, this flower also has the property of changing colors, but its palette ranges from soft peach to orange-gold. Abundant white spots on the green foliage set off the wavy covers of the flowers and it seems that the Callas, reflecting the sunlight, shine with golden reflections.

5.Reproduction

Species plants can be propagated by sowing seeds, but for this you need to be patient - plants obtained from seeds bloom for the first time 3 to 5 years after sowing. Varietal callas when propagated by seed may lose their attractive appearance. Vegetative methods or division of adult calla lilies have become more widespread.

5.1.Growing from seeds

Seeds can be collected from your own plants, choosing the largest and brightly colored blanket. After flowering, the peduncle and spathe are left on the plant and the seeds are waited for ripening. Fully ripened planting material is dried in a warm place for 2 - 3 days.

The germination rate of seeds is quite low and to increase it, it is worth pre-soaking the seeds in warm water with the addition of drugs such as epin and zircon for several hours.

Sowing of seeds is carried out in late February - early March, using seedling boxes with a lid and drainage holes. Fill the boxes with soil and spread the seeds over its surface.

The seedlings are covered from above with a layer of substrate 7-10 mm thick and the soil surface is abundantly irrigated using a spray bottle. The boxes are covered with a lid, which is lifted daily and water condensation is removed from it.

With the appearance of the first shoots, the cover is removed. When 2 leaves are formed on each plant, the seedlings are planted in separate cups. 7 - 10 days after the dive, the first fertilizing with nitrogen fertilizers is carried out in a very low concentration.

You can pre-germinate the seeds under a damp paper towel and plant them in the ground only when the first shoots appear. Germination usually occurs within a week, and during this time it is worth maintaining uniform humidity by spraying the napkin with water from a spray bottle.

5.2.Division of calla lilies

Division is carried out both with the help of daughter nodules, which will appear from time to time near the mother plant, and by cutting a large tuber with several growth points. In this case, the cut areas must be treated with brilliant green and dried in the open air for several hours before planting.

After planting, such cuttings are watered very carefully - the slightest flood will provoke the appearance of rot on unhealed wounds. Rhizomatous Ethiopian calla lilies reproduce somewhat differently

At the beginning of autumn, the plants are removed from the soil and shaken off any remaining soil. The root collar and rhizome are separated by hand. The rhizome is planted back into the pot and stored in a dark and cool place at a temperature of about 12 - 15 degrees with high humidity. Within a couple of months, the first shoots may appear in the pot.

Medicines that cause stool to darken

These include:

  1. Activated carbon, which is often taken for intoxication. During the removal of coal from the body, the color of the stool changes to black. This phenomenon can last for several days, and then everything goes away without consequences.
  2. Medicines aspirin, nimesil, ibuprofen and long-term use of antibiotics can also change the color of stool.
  3. Bismuth-containing drugs prescribed for the treatment of intestinal ulcers and other pathologies developing in the duodenum.
  4. The color of excrement is affected by certain vitamins (which include blueberries or iron) and iron-containing preparations. A change in stool color is not an indication to stop taking the drug. Feces may remain black throughout the course of therapy and up to 7 days after its completion.

Calla zantedeschia ethiopica: description and cultivation features

Calla zantedeschia Ethiopian
Calla aefiopica L.
or calla lily belongs to the Araceae family. Homeland: Africa.

This is a beautiful flowering plant that produces a first-class cut flower in industrial floriculture and blooms for a long time in rooms.

Pay attention to the photo - calla zantedeschia ethiopica has large, wide, arrow-shaped succulent leaves 60–80 cm long, on fleshy tender petioles:

The flowers of the Ethiopian Zantedeschia are original in their structure. The large flower arrow ends in a wide asymmetrical bell of white or yellow color. This “case” is surrounded by a narrow spadix, consisting of dense, inconspicuous flowers. The roots are cord-like and fleshy. They arise from a succulent tuberous rhizome, around which a large number of offspring with small, weak leaves develop throughout the year.

Look what a zantedeschia flower looks like in these photos:

Features of reproduction.

Calla lilies are propagated by seeds or suckers. Seedlings are grown throughout the year in ordinary bowls filled with crushed expanded clay and sand. The largest offspring are separated from the mother plant in June-July after flowering and planted in wide, low pots.

Features of cultivation.

Shade-tolerant and moisture-loving, prefers acidic, humus-rich soils. The pots are placed in wide pallets and kept on the northern and eastern windows. Callas bloom when they are two years old in the fall (November) and bloom all winter. When caring for calla zantedeschia at home, from the beginning of flowering, periodically give foliar feeding with microelements (boron, zinc, manganese, molybdenum, potassium iodide, copper) and often spray with clean water. After flowering, the leaves turn yellow and the growth of callas stops, although the roots continue to develop. During this period, all shoots are removed from the base of the bush, as they weaken the plant and delay flowering. Yellow leaves are cut out. After resting, callas develop powerful leaves and begin to bloom if the rules of care are followed. Calla lilies are planted in a mixture consisting of peat soil, clay-turf and humus soil with the addition of sand (1: 1: 1: 1/2). Calla grows great in clean peat.

In boxes it can be planted together with Kredner begonia and other ornamental plants. To care for the zantedeschia flower as carefully as possible, it is kept outdoors in the summer and brought indoors in the fall. During the period of leaf development, abundant watering and fertilizing are needed. In hydroculture it grows well for many years in gravel, expanded clay, peat, and various nutrient solutions at pH 5.0–6.0. The first days after planting the offspring, water is supplied to the substrate, then a nutrient solution of 50% concentration, and after 2–3 weeks - 100% concentration. The air temperature should be approximately +15–17 °C, humidity – 80–85%. At higher temperatures and lack of light, calla leaves stretch out, break easily, become light green in color, and the number of flowers decreases sharply.

Here are photos of caring for Zantede Ethiopian at home:

Today we will talk about a popular flowering plant that came to us from South Africa. We will talk about the nuances of cultivation at home and wintering Ethiopian calla lilies. If you call this plant universal, you will be one hundred percent right. They decorate homes and include them in bouquets. This is an excellent greenhouse plant.

Several features of the Ethiopian calla lily:

  1. Big sizes.
  2. Wide, succulent, shiny leaves.
  3. Heart-shaped bright green leaves.
  4. The original structure of the flower is an inflorescence-cob on the arrow.
  5. The beginning of flowering is the second half of the winter period.
  6. The plant pleases the eye with magnificent flowers for one and a half to two months.

So, let's move on to the main issues.

Under what circumstances do you need to urgently call an ambulance?

If the cause of unusual stool in a person is bleeding or the development of a disease, it is usually accompanied by:

  • abdominal pain;
  • increase in temperature (sometimes very sharp and dangerous - up to 41˚C);
  • dizziness;
  • nausea and/or vomiting (including blood);
  • presence of blood in feces;
  • bleeding from the anus.

If you have at least one of the listed symptoms, immediately call an ambulance or try to get to the hospital yourself as soon as possible!

It is especially important to do this if you are diagnosed with an ulcer, cirrhosis, hepatitis, or another disease described in the previous sections. Remember that even a 5-minute delay can cause death, since often very dark or black-green stool is a consequence of internal bleeding. Also, do not delay visiting a doctor if you have been experiencing symptoms for several days or the problem has occurred in a small child older than one week.

Care after cutting

The aristocratic, black calla lily captivates the eye. The scope of application of flowers is extensive. When cut, they are used in holiday bouquets and interior decoration.

To keep the flower fresh for a long time, florists advise keeping it in a cool place. Water in a container at room temperature.

What do these flowers symbolize?

Black calla lilies are primarily a symbol of elegance and mystery. Flower petals are smooth and silky. In many countries, black callas are associated with negativity. In addition, beautiful flowers are often associated with farewell not only to the deceased, but also to the girl with whom the young man wants to break off relations.

Black calla lilies are also associated with poor health. The reason for this lies in the unusual shape of the flowers.

Description of the Black Queen variety

All types of anthuriums that are grown indoors are divided into several groups according to leaf color:

  • Variegated.
  • With leaves of original shape.
  • Green-leaved.

Anthurium is distinguished by its original flower shape, by which it can be easily distinguished from other plants. Its spadix is wrapped in a bright shiny stipule, which is usually called a flower. The color of the stipule can be almost any shade of red, white and even black. Rather, it is not black, but dark red.

This is exactly how the Black Queen hybrid was created by breeders. This is not the only variety with dark stipules; there is also chocolate and blue. Their names correspond to the color of the stipule.

Structural features of the variety:

  • The leaves of the Black Queen variety are green. They do not change shade throughout their entire life.
  • The leaf shape is heart-shaped. The petiole is straight and grows vertically. Sheet length 30 cm, width 25 cm.
  • The height of the plant reaches 80 cm. This is a tall variety of anthurium.
  • Peduncles are laid in the axils of the leaves. When they grow, they exceed the height of the bush, towering above the leaves.
  • The stipule of Black Queen during the initial period of flowering is colored burgundy. Over time, it darkens, and after a while it becomes black with a barely noticeable reddish tint.
  • The texture of the bedspread is corrugated. The relief veins make it look like this. The length of the flower can reach 20 cm.

Anthurium Black Queen has an interesting feature: flowers with stipules of two colors can appear on one bush - some are black, others are red. The cob looks original. At first it is white, then acquires a greenish color. Together with a black bedspread, it looks not only impressive, but also somewhat mournful. Therefore, not all gardeners like it. It is preferred by those who like to grow something original.

Calla rehmannii

Calla Remani is a low-growing species. Plants reach a height of no more than half a meter. It has narrow green leaves that are shed in the winter. Propagated by tubers, popular in indoor floriculture.

Known varieties:

  1. “Evening” is the name given to a variety of calla lilies with dark purple, almost black flowers.
  2. “Indian Summer” is an unusual and rare variety of red calla lily with a garnet hue.
  3. “Chameleon” fully lives up to its name - the flowers shine in all shades of peach and golden tones. Dark green leaves are covered with white specks.
  4. “Picasso” is a variety of calla lilies 35-45 cm high. Large burgundy flowers with a light border bloom in July-September and bloom for up to a month and a half.
  5. Black Forest - this variety has large candle-shaped flowers of a burgundy-violet hue.
  6. "Anneke" - beautiful funnel-shaped flowers in a pink-violet hue.

Caring for red lilies

Red lilies, like any other flowers, require some care. Some varieties require more care, some are not too fussy and do not even need to be dug up for the winter.

Lighting, temperature and humidity

Absolutely all garden species love the sun, loose soil without stagnant moisture and the absence of strong drafts. Some species can bloom beautifully in partial shade, but this regime is undesirable

It is important to remember the rule: the top of the lily is in the sun, and the bottom is in the shade

Although lilies love the sun, in particularly dry weather they can become overheated. To avoid this, it is advisable to mulch the soil at the roots of the plant with light sawdust or straw. Also, in dry weather, the flower requires a little more moisture than usual. Do not forget that although Liliaceae do not like drafts, the place for planting them must be well ventilated in order to maintain optimal temperature conditions.

You need to be very careful with watering. Gardeners say that it is better to slightly dry out the lily rather than overwater it, because rotten bulbs can no longer be revived. To avoid such cases, do not be lazy to mulch your garden flowers to always be sure that the plant has enough moisture and the soil is not overdried by the sun.

Watering, fertilizing, soil care

Lilies do not like excess moisture, but they still need regular watering. Plants need to be watered most at the beginning of summer and immediately during flowering. It is advisable to water in the morning or during the daytime at the roots, and then loosen the soil a little. If you have prudently mulched the root system of the flower, there is no need for loosening. After the buds wither, plants need less moisture, but this does not mean that they should be forgotten. You need to water until late autumn to protect the flowers from drying out.

Lilies need to be fed several times a year. The first feeding is done in early spring, before shoots appear. Complex fertilizers are used for this procedure. The next feeding is required already during the budding period. You can use the same fertilizers as the first time.

After the last buds fade, the bulbs need potassium-phosphorus fertilizers to regain their strength.

Gardeners advise removing buds from first-year lilies. This is explained by the fact that in the first year the flower must get stronger and gain strength. This procedure will help you admire large, healthy buds in the future.

The acidity of the soil should be carefully monitored. Some species cannot tolerate the presence of lime, while for others it is a guarantee of health. Also, do not neglect fertilizer, because many varieties require fertile soil and an impressive humus layer.

Causes of black stool during pregnancy

The goal of every normal mother is to bear and raise a healthy child. The state of health of the mother, especially in the first stages of fetal development, greatly influences the development and health of the child. Therefore, you need to carefully monitor all changes in your body. Black feces are quite common in pregnant women. However, pregnancy is not the cause of its appearance. In principle, it cannot influence the darkening of feces.

The most common cause of black stool in pregnant women does not always lie in the development of any disease. Mothers carrying a child consume large amounts of vitamin complexes, fruits and vegetables rich in iron and other nutrients that help cause darkening of poop. If this is not the reason, then most likely it is caused by an illness. Perhaps you previously had any diseases of the gastrointestinal tract or a number of other chronic diseases that are in remission. In any case, pregnancy is not the time when you can look for reasons on the Internet. Expectant mothers - run to the doctor!!!
