  • Rose “Black Prince” is a luxurious shrub with a truly “royal” appearance. The variety belongs to the group of remontant hybrids and represents a rare variety of “black” roses of ancient selection. Its velvety, deep burgundy flowers with a black tint have a mystical beauty. The shrub is famous for its fragrant floral-wine aroma and is widely popular among gardeners from different parts of the world.

    The British rose Black Prince, with its elegant, expressive flowers of shimmering dark color, deservedly bears its noble title.

    General characteristics of the Black Prince. Description of roses and application in landscape design

    The plant at its peak can grow up to one and a half meters in height. The thorns on the stem are densely spaced, the foliage is dark green in color. From 1 to 4 inflorescences can appear on one bud. The bud has a dense core consisting of 40-50 petals. Newly ripened buds are almost black in color, but as they open, a burgundy tint appears. The varietal rose Black Prince has a number of positive qualities:

    • the color of the bud corresponds to the name;
    • tolerates severe frosts well;
    • has a pronounced aroma;
    • flowering lasts throughout the summer.

    Rose Prince (The Prince)

    Along with the positive aspects, there are also obvious disadvantages:

    • in winter, in areas where the temperature drops below -15 degrees, it becomes necessary to cover the bushes;
    • the variety is susceptible to diseases;
    • Due to the fact that the stem and bud are connected by a thin peduncle, the inflorescences cannot be used in decorating the yard and landscape design.

    Note! The Black Prince variety is not intended for landscape decoration. However, experts take risks and, despite the thin stalk of the plant, combine it with bush plants when planting.

    Features of agricultural technology

    When cultivating roses, you should take into account some botanical features of this ornamental crop:

    • in the northern regions of our country, for planting rose bushes, it is recommended to allocate areas on high ground so that the roses are well illuminated by the sun and have sufficient protection from the northern cold winds;
    • growing roses in the southern regions is more convenient, but requires the allocation of flat areas protected from dry and hot winds for planting;
    • Strong shading or excessively intense lighting also has an adverse effect on the growth qualities and flowering indicators of rose bushes;
    • the soil in the rose growing area must be structural and have sufficient water permeability;
    • Chernozem loamy soils and relatively calcareous soils are best suited for cultivating rose bushes;

    • the presence of loose and sandy soils requires improvement by applying manure, and heavy clay soil can be corrected with sand, straw-rotted manure or compost;
    • soil preparation should include deep autumn plowing with the application of mineral fertilizers;
    • planting of rose seedlings should be carried out in the spring, before the onset of the active growing season, or in early autumn;
    • for planting annual seedlings, it is necessary to prepare planting holes measuring approximately 35x35 cm;
    • About 3.0–3.5 kg of rotted manure or compost mass should be poured into the bottom of the planting hole before immersing the rose’s root system.

    The technology for growing black hybrid tea roses of the “Black Prince” variety does not differ significantly from the agricultural technology of other varieties and consists in implementing standard measures for caring for the ornamental crop.

    Special attention requires timely and competent pruning, which will create a high-quality crown of the plant and stimulate annual, abundant and long-lasting flowering. Pruning is done in early spring, before the buds begin to swell. It can be different:

    • short pruning of shoots into two buds guarantees abundant, lush, annual flowering and forms a decorative crown;
    • average pruning of shoots into five buds is most often used when growing hybrid tea varieties;
    • long pruning of the apical part of the shoots and branches into ten buds is necessary for plants with too active growth;
    • Anti-aging pruning of the Black Prince rose is carried out almost at the surface of the soil and promotes the formation of young and stronger shoots.

    Black Prince rose bushes are watered as needed. Neither excessive drying of the soil nor soaking of the root system of the decorative crop should be allowed. In hot and dry weather, watering should be carried out 3-4 times a month, spending about 2-3 buckets of water for each adult rose bush. After rains and irrigation activities, it is necessary to loosen the soil. To support the plant’s immunity and improve the condition of the rose at all stages of growth and development, it is recommended to fertilize according to the following scheme:

    • the first application of fertilizers is carried out before the formation of buds, using 10–15 g of ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate, 25–30 g of superphosphate and 10–15 g of potassium salt per 10 liters of water;
    • the second feeding, after flowering, is carried out with a solution based on 25–50 g of ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate, 50–60 g of superphosphate and 10–15 g of potassium salt per 10 liters of water.

    Rules for planting roses in open ground

    Rose Prince (The Prince)

    Rose Black Prince will bloom abundantly only with proper planting and choice of location. The plant can be propagated either by seeds or by cuttings. The simplest and most effective way is to plant shoots or seedlings. The optimal time for planting and propagation is considered to be the beginning of autumn. Although there are experts who believe that shoots planted before April are in no way inferior to their autumn “brothers”. Roses are heat-loving flowers, which is why when choosing a location you should give preference to fairly bright places without drafts. It is worth considering that the Black Prince does not tolerate direct sunlight.

    Inflorescences

    Before planting, you need to prepare the soil:

    • thoroughly loosen the ground;
    • treat for weeds;
    • enrich with minerals and fertilize with humus if the soil is not fertile.

    Important! Before planting the cuttings in the ground, it is necessary to pre-treat it. To do this, the prepared shoot must be immersed in a special stimulator, which promotes root growth. Exposure period: one day.

    How does a plant reproduce?

    The simplest method of propagating the Black Prince rose that guarantees the preservation of varietal characteristics is cuttings. Planting material - a part of a semi-lignified shoot 15–20 cm long with 3–4 buds cut 10–15 days after the start of flowering:

    1. The lower oblique cut is immersed in water with the addition of any biostimulant for 3–4 hours.
    2. The cuttings are planted in loose soil in separate containers (at home) or in a greenhouse, on a bed under a film.
    3. In autumn, rooted specimens are transferred from the garden to a cellar or basement, ensuring a temperature of about 5°C, buried in damp sand or peat.
    4. In spring, roses are planted in the chosen location.

    Roses obtained from cuttings bloom in the third year after planting in a permanent place

    Caring for black tea rose

    Apricot Black Prince - description and history of fruit selection

    The hybrid flower is considered capricious and quite demanding to care for. Be sure to follow the following recommendations regarding the care of new roses:

    • proper organization of watering. It should not be frequent, but plentiful. After watering, you need to intensively loosen the soil. The frequency of watering the bushes should be once every 6 days;
    • The beauty of the bush and the quality of the buds largely depend on the preparedness of the soil. The plant will curl upward if the soil is well fertilized with a solution of ammonium nitrate. Flowers love light, fluffy soil. If the land does not meet these requirements, then you can use a ready-made earth mixture for planting;
    • trimming the stems is necessary to prevent the growth of wild shoots. The plant must be pruned in the spring;
    • after the plant fades and the temperature drops below 5 degrees, care must be taken to prepare the bushes for wintering. The bush must be trimmed, all leaves removed, a frame body constructed and covering material placed on it.

    Reviews from gardeners

    Olga, 43 years old, Minsk

    My bush has been growing in full sun for 5 years. During the winter, the shoots sometimes freeze out, but in the season it quickly catches up with new ones 1.2-1.7 m tall. Overwinters under hillocks and spruce branches. The flowers are very beautiful, large, up to 15 cm in diameter. They last a long time - up to 2 weeks, and do not droop on thick, strong stems. The bush is indifferent to rain, does not get sick, but I carry out preventive treatments.

    Lyudmila, 63 years old, Moscow region.

    My rose is 2 years old and hasn’t been sick yet. The flowers are beautiful, large, velvety, and do not droop for a long time. The bush is really not very slender, I put up supports to straighten the shoots. The first flowers were single, then they grew in 3-5 pieces. Decent variety, no complaints.

    Zoya, 46 years old, Dnepropetrovsk

    A very beautiful rose, but it seems to me not for our climate. In heat above 30 degrees, the outer petals burn, and the flower dries out without opening. Her time is spring and autumn. Then the flowers are of wondrous beauty, deep in color, with black markings. Up to 16 cm in diameter. The bushes are tall, but due to the faded foliage they are not very showy.

    Bloom of the Black Prince

    The buds of hybrid tea roses of the climbing group begin to open at the beginning of summer and continue flowering until the onset of the first cold weather. However, many are faced with the problem of a lack of flowering in climbing groups of roses. This may be due to the following reasons:

    • a young bush of the first year may not bloom;
    • wrong landing site;
    • poor pruning or care;
    • presence of diseases or root rot;

    Important! During flowering, it is necessary to prune the bush, cutting off faded buds at an angle of 45 degrees.

    History of selection

    The variety was brought to Russia from Great Britain; it captivated the aristocrats of the 19th century, who sought to decorate their gardens with an unusual flower.

    Black roses began to be created by breeders in Great Britain. When it was concluded that it was impossible to achieve a pure shade by combining different genes, they came up with a trick.

    Taking a variety of white roses as a basis, they simply painted the petals with a dark red dye. Unopened buds appeared black.

    Only the work of the British scientist William Paul, who produced a hybrid tea variety with dark petals in 1866, was successful.

    Description

    Similar varieties are “Black Magic” (black magic) or “Black Jade”. It first appeared in England, namely in the nineteenth century.

    Although "Black Prince" has been growing for a long time, it is extremely popular. " Black Prince" has a red color with a dark tint.

    "Black Prince" grows in bushes. The height of one such bush can reach just over one meter.

    Tip : It is best to plant flowers in groups and in the shade, this will look more beautiful in your garden.

    The leaves themselves are green with a dark tone. This flower has an average of forty-five petals. Roses emit a strong fragrance. The smell is very similar to the smell of wine.

    Watering

    Black Prince is a rose with a deeply penetrating, well-developed root system. This must be taken into account when watering it. You should not do this too often: only after the top layer of soil is completely dry. Try not to get the leaves wet. After watering, be sure to mulch, which will retain moisture in the soil for a long time. Straw, fallen leaves, and compost are suitable for this purpose.

    Disease and pest control

    The Black Prince rose is resistant to many common rose diseases, but black spot and powdery mildew can damage the rose if the planting site is not chosen correctly or if it is poorly cared for. Therefore, spraying with fungicides will not hurt as a preventative measure.

    To protect against pests, it is necessary to promptly get rid of weeds, mulch the root circle, and carry out preventive spraying with insecticides.

    Rose Black Prince is in demand in home gardening and is popular in landscape design. Experts in the field of garden decor recommend combining its planting with bush garden roses that produce white or light cream-colored flowers.
