Perhaps because of their association with tropical environments, palms evoke a sense of peace and relaxation like no other plant. Indoor palms are low-maintenance and also add a bold, tropical look to home interiors that is surprisingly easy to achieve.
Most indoor palms survive in the same conditions we consider comfortable: warm temperatures, average humidity and moderate light. Many of these slow-growing palms required only occasional attention to reward you with their elegant green fronds.
Here are eight of the best indoor palm trees that will add a fresh, tropical feel to your home.
Is it difficult to grow a palm tree?
Even a novice gardener can grow them, provided that a number of conditions are met to create the microclimate that is necessary for the development of the plant. It is no secret that not only novice gardeners, but also experienced connoisseurs of the beauty of these beautiful plants want to grow an ornamental houseplant in the form of a palm tree.
The word “palm” is translated from Latin as “palm”. And this is completely justified, because its leaves in most varieties resemble a human brush. There are two types of domestic palms, which are called pinnate and fan. Under natural conditions, they grow in the subtropics and tropics, where it is warm and humid.
If you carefully study the conditions in which these plants grow naturally and can create the necessary microclimate, then growing different types of domestic palm trees will not cause you any special problems. In order for this tropical tree to become home and be comfortable in the created conditions, it is necessary to follow fairly simple rules for caring for it.
Almost all types of domestic palm trees (you can see the photo in this article) require spacious rooms. These exotic trees do not tolerate nearby other plants.
general information
Cyperus is a moisture-loving inhabitant of swamps and rivers, and that is why it is difficult to water it. Under favorable conditions, it grows rapidly and forms real impenetrable thickets.
Indoor cyperus rarely grows above 1 m. The plant has a superficial, but very branched rhizome, straight shoots and narrow long leaves, collected in interesting umbrellas at the top. In decorative floriculture, variegated varieties are especially popular.
Cyperus actively branches as old shoots die off. In summer it is capable of blooming, but this flowering is completely unremarkable. Faded yellow buds are arranged singly or collected in rosettes.

Dracaena
For several decades now, this particular flower has been used for landscaping apartments, houses, and official institutions. The types of domestic palm trees are so diverse that everyone can choose a variety for themselves. This showy plant has tufts of long leaves gathered in panicles at the top of its trunk. They can be painted in different colors - from light to dark green. Striped specimens are common.
Often, several trunks grow from the root, up to two meters high. This type of decorative indoor palm tree is easily propagated by cuttings.
Description
In nature you can find species reaching 3 m in height; low varieties are common in indoor floriculture.
On the triangular, erect stems of the plant there are whorls in the form of an umbrella. The long, thin leaves come in varying shades of green. Thanks to breeding work, variegated varieties are found in indoor floriculture.
Cyperus blooms with attractive flowers that peek out from the axils of the leaves.
Indoor cyperus is an unpretentious, hardy plant that is used to decorate poorly lit areas of the room.
Date palm
This variety is the most famous: our great-grandmothers grew it in their homes. And this is no coincidence - it is this species that is most suitable for growing at home. Perhaps the only drawback of this plant is its impressive size: it is not possible to grow it in every room.
Flower growers value this variety for its lush crown, consisting of beautiful feathery leaves. This species takes root well and actively develops even with minimal care.
Signs and superstitions
Popular beliefs say that the elegant umbrella plant is used not only to decorate rooms, but also gives positive energy. Cyperus protects household members from various troubles.
On a note! By growing cyperus at home, you can protect yourself from lies, bad intentions, and deception. In addition, its cultivation is recommended for people prone to depression.
The umbrella plant helps improve sleep quality. There must be a pot of cyperus in the bedroom if the owners suffer from insomnia, are tormented, and cannot sleep.
Cyperus is undemanding to growing conditions, so even with minimal requirements it can be successfully grown at home. Cyperus is used to decorate the surface of the aquarium, and the Helfera variety is planted in combination with other aquatic plants.
Hovea
Different types of home decorative palm trees came to us from different countries. For example, howea is native to Australia. The tree has a straight trunk, wrapped in leaf scars. Long feathery leaves, spreading branches, sometimes reaching four meters in length - this is exactly what this palm tree looks like. As you understand, such a plant needs a fairly spacious room.
Among the many varieties of Howea is Forstera, which has short red petioles, vertically arranged, and luxurious spreading leaves on a single trunk. This species tolerates lack of lighting very well. The leaves do not turn yellow or dry out, and even in very dry air they remain green and fresh. Howea is quite resistant to pests, but grows very slowly.
Cat flower grower: Cat palm, or Which indoor plants are harmless to animals
Meow, dear flower growers! Meow, furry residents of apartments where lovely juicy flowers are located on the windowsills!
The hostess brought some kind of bunch of green umbrellas into the house. At first I was wary: was there really going to be a fight for a place again? But I admit, I couldn’t resist the mysterious plant. Cyperus – that’s the name of this tasty little plant. I had no idea that cyperus was so tasty. I gave it to my neighbor's cat and he really liked this herb. So on long winter evenings, sitting on the sofa with a glass... oh, with a cat palm , you can indulge in high thoughts. In addition, this plant is useful: it cleanses the stomach well of hair and all other nasty things. I advise you, flower growers, to grow cyperus specifically for your mustachioed animals. The cat will thank you for this. And if you are hiding a flower from the tenacious paws of a cat: know that we will get it everywhere! But don't worry, Cyperus quickly regains its shape. You can plant some especially for yourself and admire it at work. And I will tell you how to properly care for this unpretentious flower.
ORIGIN
Yes, cyperus or “ cat palm ” is unpretentious, but so useful! After all, it was from this that the Egyptians made papyrus. They also wove baskets and made sandals. And they even ate its roots, I’m telling you, it’s a delicious plant! Respect the Egyptians, they were the first to recognize the divine principle in us.
The name of the flower comes from the Egyptian - “gift of the river”, which means cyperus. Gift of the river - because it grew near rivers and in swamps.
cyperus plant comes from the sedge family. Remember the cartoon where little Raccoon went for sedge? It seems to my owner that I am also a bit of a raccoon.
There are up to 600 species of Cyperus. Some of its species can reach a height of as much as 3 meters. By the way, one of the subspecies - cyperus papyrus hadidii is in danger of extinction. This subspecies grows only in Egypt.
Flowering period: April to September, but this depends on the species. True, the flowers are not very attractive; they appear as if from dill umbrellas and are white.
CARE AND REPRODUCTION
Cyperus does not require a special temperature regime. In room conditions he is happy and healthy at a temperature of +20 degrees. In summer he loves to be outdoors. Just don’t put it to bask in the open sun, partial shade is better. May get burned.
It must be remembered that the “ cat palm ” is a very moisture-loving plant. It is necessary to constantly maintain soil moisture. I advise you to purchase a deep tray for a pot with a flower, and add warm water so that the roots of the cyperus always remain moist. Brr, water... The owner washed my paws recently, so I almost went crazy... Well, not about me now. So: if the soil dries out completely, your palm tree may die. And spray it more often and wipe the leaves, because cyperus loves moist air.
You can feed the plant once every 2-3 weeks, in summer and spring. To stimulate growth, remove dried and yellowed parts of the flower.
The plant can be replanted all year round. For replanting, choose a tall pot. Suitable soil is made from leafy and humus soil, peat, sand in the following proportion: 3:1:1:1, and, of course, you need good drainage, which should fill ¼ of the pot.
They are bred with umbrellas: they cut off the top, often shorten the long leaves, and then put them in water. After about a week, roots appear in the internodes.
DISEASES AND PESTS
I also forgot to say about diseases and pests of cat delicacy. Basically, the threat occurs due to insufficient watering and dry air. Thrips, spider mites, whiteflies, scale insects - that's what you need to be wary of. So, you saw an impudent insect eating a cyperus (I’m not talking about your beloved cat, of course). What to do?
You can spray the plant with a special anti-parasite agent. It is sold in flower shops. Or you can make it yourself: make a soap solution and wipe the leaves and stems with it using a sponge. After the procedure, move the flower to a cool place and ensure sufficient soil and air moisture. If necessary, repeat the procedure. Make sure your mustachioed couch potato doesn't get poisoned by chemicals!
I told him everything I learned. If you have any questions, write. I’ll ask the hostess and I’ll share with you. Meow everyone!
Liviston Palm (Latania)
This plant fascinates even people who have little interest in plants. Magnificent large shiny fan leaves can decorate any interior. It must be admitted that this is a rather capricious plant: it needs good lighting. In addition, when there is insufficient air humidity, the tips of the leaves of this palm tree dry out.
And at the same time, this is one of the few types of domestic palm trees that does not require too much care at home and at the same time grows quite quickly.
Cyperus – photo
It is only at first glance that it seems that Cyperus is completely unremarkable. When it grows, it looks no worse than more exotic decorative foliage plants!

Top dressing
A lack of microelements negatively affects the leaves: they become covered with brown or yellow spots. Palm growth slows down and leaves fall off. In this case, you can use liquid fertilizers, for example, Agricola. A tablespoon of the drug is diluted in water (10 l). Apply it once every ten days in the summer and every twenty days during the dormant period. After fertilizing, it is necessary to loosen the soil.
How to choose the right one for your home?
Do not purchase a palm tree from a catalog, as this will not allow you to fully familiarize yourself with the condition of the selected specimen. It is better to make a purchase in a specialized store or nursery.
When choosing, pay attention to the following signs:
- healthy green mass;
- no unpleasant musty odor;
- overly elongated trunk and leaves;
- stickiness of sheet plates or the presence of growths on them;
- violation of the integrity of the sheet surface or its non-standard dimensions.
Transfer
These indoor beauties are rarely replanted, as needed, for example, when the container becomes too small for the plant. For replanting, choose a larger pot. Carefully break the old container, transfer the tree along with a lump of earth to a new pot, adding soil. The roots cannot be cut.
Palm trees, as a rule, do not tolerate transplantation well, therefore, to bring the flower out of stress, frequent and intensive watering will be required. Magnificent palm leaves need to be cleaned from dust using a soft textile cloth. Sometimes they are bathed with warm water.
