Unusual varieties of phalaenopsis: Diamond sky, Amabilis, Amsterdam, Anastasia

The mesmerizing beauty of exotic flowers inspires biologists to create new hybrids. It is not at all difficult to grow a bright tropical miracle on the windowsill - the phalaenopsis orchid.

There is a hybrid for everyone that they want to bring home and decorate their home, for example, phalaenopsis varieties: Diamond Sky, Amabilis, Amsterdam, Anastasia.

The types of indoor orchids that gardeners love deserve special attention.

Diamond Sky

The plant is as beautiful as its poetic name and can be the pride of a phalaenopsis lover's .

Peduncle height up to 65 cm, flower diameter about 10 cm.

Extraordinarily beautiful phalaenopsis orchid Diamond Sky.

External characteristics

White or light spots on the petals resemble an hourglass lying horizontally on a soft pink background.

Bright dots, like stars, are scattered closer to the middle of the corolla. Horizontal strokes and dashes on the outer edges of the side petals.

A small, neat lip painted in the same rich shade as the dots and strokes.

Flowers with dense petals are well preserved during transportation.

Story

Phalaenopsis Diamond Sky was bred in Holland from a group of Taiwanese hybrids .

Colors

The characteristic pattern of dots and dashes is preserved on flowers of different shades: crimson, pink, purple, lilac.

Features of flowering

It can bloom every six months, flowering duration is about two months.

A healthy plant of this species under optimal conditions produces brighter and larger flowers every year.

Common varieties with photos

Pirate Picoti

Pirate Picotee. The main difference between the variety is the edging of the petals (it is always slightly darker than the main part). The height of an adult plant reaches one meter. The leaf blades are medium in size and fleshy. The plant usually grows from 3 to 6 leaf blades.

The number of peduncles depends on the care, but usually there are no more than three. The diameter of one flower is 8 cm. The buds bloom every 6 months and remain for 2 months. They belong to the pink phalaenopsis.

Andorra

Andorra. The foliage of the variety is large: it grows up to 25 cm in length and up to 8 cm in width. But the height of Andorra usually does not exceed 60 cm. The inflorescences are large. The petals are most often purple with light, almost white veins. The center of the flower is darker than the rest of the mass.

Blooms continuously for up to three months.

Legend

Legend. A low variety - 35 cm in height. Two-tone color - a white base with bright splashes (usually burgundy or purple). The back side of the petal is painted in the same way. The lips always stand out against the background of the entire bud - they are orange in color. Legend can also be grown in water without soil. Flowering lasts at least 2 months.

Leopard Prince

Leopard Prince. One of the large species with flowers up to 9 cm in diameter. The culture got its name due to its appearance: the color of the petals is similar to a leopard. The petals are bright and waxy. Can be grown at home and in open ground, only in warm climates. The Leopard Prince is often used to breed new varieties.

They have a pleasant light vanilla aroma.

Polka Dots

Polka Dots. The petal color is white with purple spots in the center. The flower size is 8 cm. The leaf blades reach 25 cm in length, and the inflorescences are 30 cm. The leaves are elongated, rich green in color.

The plant is relatively low in height - 50 cm. One orchid usually produces 2-3 peduncles.

Ever spring prince

The variety was bred in Holland. The flower blooms up to 7.5 cm. The petals are dense, double-colored. The main color is white, along the edges and in the center - lilac.

In an adult plant, the number of peduncles and flowers increases. The variety lives for 10–15 years, but it must be regularly updated by cuttings or children.

The peculiarity of this variety is its ability to easily endure long-term transportation.

Diamond sky

Diamond Sky. Peduncles reach a height of 65 cm. The flowers are relatively large - 10 cm in diameter. The color of the petals is soft pink with bright burgundy symmetrical inclusions. The lip is small in size, of the same burgundy color. There are subspecies with crimson, lilac, purple and pink splashes.

Meteor

Meteor. A relatively tall variety: its height reaches 90 cm. The foliage is richly dark in color, fleshy, large.

It got its name due to the color of its petals. On a white background, there seem to be traces of bright pink color from the flight of a meteorite. Blooms every 3 months.

Karina Aloha

Karin Aloha. The flowers of this variety are large, but it blooms quite rarely - once a year. The buds usually bloom in late autumn and the flowering period is 14 weeks. The main color of the petals is dark yellow with pink splashes, which sometimes merge into a single spot. The lip is yellow-red.

The variety Karina Aloha is sometimes confused with Phalaenopsis Charmer. More information about this variety can be found here.

Pandoki

Pandoki. The flowers of this species are small (no larger than 5 cm). The petals are waxy and bright. The bush itself is compact, growing no higher than 40 cm. But its roots are strong and fleshy. With proper care, it blooms actively (up to four times a year) for up to three months.

Fancy

It is practically no different in size from other species; the flowers are standard - 7–8 cm. The main difference is the unusual coloring. On a white background there are splashes of raspberry color. In the center they are thick, and towards the edges they become thinner, giving way to whiteness. The lip is slightly different in color, it is burgundy-orange.

Asian intrigue

Intrigue. The foliage grows in pairs, up to 25 cm in length. The peduncle often branches, stimulating the appearance of lateral shoots. This increases the number of flowers on one plant (the diameter of one bud is 6 cm). The center of the petals is deep pink, and its edge is also pink, but darker. The transition is jagged. Lip with a yellow center and purple color.

It is considered a species with a rare color.

Ambinas

amboinensis. A low plant - its height is only 25 cm, it can be classified as a mini-orchid. One crop grows from 3 to 5 leaves. The peduncle is most often drooping or curved (15–20 cm high).

Every year the crop produces a new peduncle, and the old ones branch and elongate. 2–3 flowers bloom simultaneously on one plant. The petals have sharp tips and are wide, so they overlap each other at the base. The color of the petals is lemon or deep yellow with wide transverse stripes of dark orange color.

Natasha Aiko

Natasha Aiko. One of the most unusual species. The parameters differ little from other types of phalaenopsis (it all depends on care), but the colors do not allow you to take your eyes off the crop. The base of the petal is lemony, and the purple inclusions densely cover the surface of the petal. The lip is lemon purple. Petals with tapered ends overlap each other.

Utopia

Utopia. The variety is characterized by light pink flowers and well-developed rhizomes. The peduncles are tall, branching, usually there are two of them on one plant.

Arx Ray

Arks Ray. Orange flowers with dark pink patterns. Does not emit fragrance, can grow up to 90 cm in height. Requires standard care for phalaenopsis.

Denver

Denver. The foliage is 25 cm long, the same size and inflorescence. The leaves are dark green. The plant reaches a height of 60 cm. The flowers are white, with a bright pink lip. Flower diameter - 8 cm.

Arcadia

Arcadia. The flowers are slightly larger than the previous variety - 9 cm each. The leaves are elongated, the color is light green. The variety reaches a height of 60 cm. The base of the petal is white, it is densely strewn with purple spots. Refers to pink phalaenopsis. The Arcadia variety is similar to the Ravello variety; it is also striped, but differs in the color of the mesh pattern.

Amabilis (Phalaenopsis amabilis, or pleasant, lovely)

External characteristics

Classic standard phalaenopsis .

Phalaenopsis Amabilis has white flowers, which symbolizes the purity of the soul.

The height of the peduncle is up to 1 m, the flowers are large, up to 10 cm in diameter, and have a delicate scent.

The flower branch is beautifully curved.

Interesting! What is variegated phalaenopsis ? The usual appearance of the leaves of indoor orchids is rich dark green. Variegated phalaenopsis is distinguished by variegated striped leaves. One of the subspecies, Ph. amabilis variegata, has a dark green center and almost yellow edges.

Ph. Amabilis variegata.

Story

Phalaenopsis Amabilis is a rare natural species that is ideal for hybridization. On its basis, many hybrids of standard phalaenopsis have been created, the name of which carries the name of the parent species .

Colors

The delicate white flowers of this species differ only in the brightness of the color of the petals that form the lip. Their inner surface has golden and yellow color variations, with purple dots and dashes of varying degrees of saturation.

Only subspecies amabilis var. fuscata has a lip without reddish stripes and dots.

Features of flowering

There can be a lot of flowers on one graceful branch Therefore, modestly colored corollas form a luxurious bouquet.

The peduncle is cut off after flowering, when the apical bud turns yellow .

Amsterdam (Phalaenopsis AMSTERDAM)

External characteristics

The bright crimson lip is cupped and has two yellow stripes inside. At the tip there are two white teeth. See what Phalaenopsis Amsterdam looks like in the photo.

Phalaenopsis Amsterdam.

The white petals are covered with a pink scattering of tiny dots, forming rays diverging from the center.

defined white border along the edge of the flower . Peduncle height up to 60 cm.

Story

Brightly colored orchid flowers with a clear pattern belong to the group of Taiwanese hybrids.

The creation of new colors and forms continues; variants of cascading phalaenopsis Amsterdam have appeared, distinguished by a long curved peduncle.

Colors

The main characteristics of the Amsterdam variety are preserved in many new hybrids of different shades of pink and lilac on a white or light background.

Features of flowering

Peduncles can branch, forming a lush raceme . After flowering, trim to the 2nd dormant bud on the branch. A new flower stalk can grow from it.

Anastasia

External characteristics

The flower is royally complex and interesting in color.

The white nose of the three-lobed lip is crowned with a three-pronged crown of light pink stripes on the upper petal.

Main color tone: dark burgundy. Rays of veins radiate from the core, turning from white to pink shades.

The whole flower seems to shimmer, playing with yellowish highlights in the middle. A long thin mustache completes the look .

Plant height is 60 cm. It blooms for two months, the dormant period is about 4 months.

History of the hybrid

Brought out by repeated crossing in a group of Taiwanese hybrids.

Colors

There are variations in the intensity of flower coloring and the number of shades.

There are variations based on coral-red tones.

Features of flowering

In hot weather, flowers may bloom paler than usual. The plant has a dormant period of about 6 months, after which it will bloom again. The peduncle should be cut back to the second bud.

Phalaenopsis Anastasia.

Landing

Phalaenopsis hybrids for indoor growing are unpretentious. Growing conditions are almost the same for everyone. After flowering, you should visually assess the condition of the plant.

It's time to replant if:

  • It can be seen that the roots are densely entwined in the pot;
  • The leaves have grown and hang below the pot;
  • Dark, diseased roots are visible;
  • The soil is crumbling.

Many orchid lovers use pine bark for soil.

For phalaenopsis orchids, clean pine bark , cleaned of essential oils and pests by digestion, is suitable.

For better plant growth and nutrition, add a small amount of:

  • Powdered coal;
  • Coconut chips;
  • Sphagnum moss.

After trimming the diseased roots, the plant is placed in a transparent pot and tightly covered with bark and moss.

Orchid diseases, photo. Phalaenopsis Diamond Sky: my first variegated flower

This morning I bathed my Diamond using a spray bottle with very warm water.

I went to sleep for two hours and got down to business, poisoning with Actellik. Smelly, but not stinking dichlorvos, perhaps because I spared my lungs and dissolved an ampoule in water as when watering and soaking orchids, and wiped the leaves with this solution. It says 2 mg per 1 liter, but if there is severe damage to pests, a 0.5 liter ampoule is possible; I got a solution of about 700-800 grams.

After a 10-minute exposure, I took out the pot and washed the bark with pleasant warm water to avoid the flowers falling off and becoming lethargic. Honestly, I haven’t read this anywhere, it’s just my intuition, I don’t know if it’s correct.

Under no circumstances should water and solution be poured into drains. She went and poured it into the street.

I had with me:

— hard blue surgical gloves;

- a regular disposable respirator;

— cotton wool for wiping sheets;

— I put water on my head. bag with handles.

The clothes they were in were soaked.

I did everything in the kitchen. I opened the window to avoid fumes; the instructions generally say outdoors (but that’s only if you spray).

After treating the flower, I treated all the surfaces in the kitchen with soda and a solution of household soap and washed the floors for prevention (you never know...), for one thing the kitchen became cleaner :-)))

Something like this…

The result is this: all the plague inhabitants turned out to be dead on the surface of the solution (I hope that’s all).

Fortunately, the weather is now more or less cloudy and sunny. I stood away from the window for an hour and a half so as not to catch a cold.

When leaving for work, I put it on the window, there is winter sun, my windows are east-south (but still closer to the east), I consider it an ideal option for flowers: autumn-spring-winter on the windowsill - without much darkening, if there are blinds, Well, in the summer, of course, we’ll move to the kitchen work surface.

Why is there not a single flower in the kitchen, everything is in other rooms, the radiators are there on one side, the window is large with three sections, it’s convenient - the orha is new, and an ideal quarantine period of 2 months is needed. In the kitchen, the ideal temperature of 25 degrees is extremely rare, mostly 20-22 degrees.

Regarding the burning in the kitchen, if you wipe the sheets with soapy water once a week, then I think the flower will not die, it will feel quite comfortable. (I haven’t used succinic acid yet, but I bought it, also in an ampoule, it’s an expensive pleasure, you know, so every time you buy it, when you open the ampoule, the substance is in a non-sterile environment and simply becomes useless, and maybe even harmful, if used 5 days after opening ).

Care

Conditions of detention

For a comfortable life of most phalaenopsis hybrids, the conditions of an ordinary living room , the air temperature is 18-22°C.

It is worth paying attention to lighting and humidity. You need bright diffused light with protection from direct sunlight on hot days and additional lighting in winter.

High humidity has a beneficial effect on the plant - it is worth placing a tray of water next to it or using a humidifier.

Watering and fertilizing

Watering by immersion can be combined with fertilizing .

Phalaenopsis orchids should be watered no more than once a week.

Dissolve complex liquid fertilizer for orchids in the recommended dosage , and immerse the pot for a few minutes.

Attention! The soil may float, it must be held with your hand. After immersion, the water must be allowed to drain.

Disease Prevention

  • Quarantine. The new plant should be kept separate from the rest for 30 days to ensure it is healthy;
  • Purity. A necessary condition for the health of an orchid, so it should be protected from dust and sprayed regularly. There should be no water remaining at the growing point - it is blotted with a cotton swab;
  • Watering. It's better not to top up than to overfill. If there is too much water, the roots may rot;
  • Temperature and light. In winter, you should protect the root system from freezing on a cold windowsill using a stand. Constant humidity at low temperatures may cause rusty spots of rot to appear on the roots.

Carefully! Burns on orchid leaves are no joke; the plant can shed buds, leaves and die from such damage.

Home care after purchase

  • Watering is moderate. As the soil dries out (in summer - 2-3 times a week, in winter once is enough).
  • The lighting needs to be bright, but diffused. Direct sunlight is dangerous for leaves and flowers.
  • Transplantation is carried out every year in early spring. The pot is selected according to the size of the root system.
  • It is better to purchase the substrate ready for orchids.

Nuances and questions from readers

Orchid lovers often wonder if it is possible to propagate an orchid, for example, Phalaenopsis Amabilis , by seeds at home?

How to grow an orchid from seeds?

  1. Collect seeds;
  2. Sow in a nutrient medium (the composition of which is classified by large companies);
  3. Create optimal conditions for germination;
  4. Wait three to four years without opening the container with seedlings;
  5. Plant the seedlings in pots and... wait another 3 years before flowering!

Let's see how realistic it is to implement this plan :

  1. The seeds are so small that they look like dust . A grain of wheat is 15,000 times larger than a phalaenopsis seed! They can only be collected in a laboratory;
  2. Seeds visible to the eye can be laid out in rows in a box , but this is not possible with a dusty substance. The seeds will scatter through the air and be lost;
  3. the composition of the seed germination mixture secret . It is impossible to compose it at home without equipment and knowledge. The food and moisture in the plant container should last for three years.

Another pitfall is that you can only buy a hybrid in the store.

From the school biology course it is known that the descendants of hybrids, that is, plants grown from their seeds, do not inherit the properties !

If you understand that simple thing, the meaning of home growing from seeds is completely lost. The color will be completely different, even if something grows.

Advice! The real way to reproduce at home is to seed the baby. It will bloom in about three years and does not require special growing conditions.

Phalaenopsis orchids

Selection by parameters

The first Phalaenopsis orchids were discovered by Georg Rumpfius, a naturalist and traveler from Germany on the Malaucca Islands (on the island of Ambron). The genus name is “night butterfly”, which in Greek sounds like Phalaina.

Phalaenopsis is considered the most unpretentious of all orchids, so if you suddenly decide to start growing orchids at home, you should start with it.

When choosing a plant, you need to carefully examine it. First of all, you should know that Phalaenopsis is grown mainly in transparent pots, and in no case in clay pots. Therefore, upon purchase, the roots will be immediately visible, which should have a green color with a silver tint. Green and dense leaves should be free of spots. You should not replant a freshly purchased plant without a particular reason. But if such a need still arises, a substrate made from pine bark is used for Phalaenopsis.

This plant feels great at daytime temperatures of +22 - +30°C and night temperatures - about +16°C. Excessive heat and drafts can be detrimental to Phalaenopsis.

Representatives of orchids love bright lighting, the lack of which can be compensated for by lighting with a fluorescent lamp. However, we must remember that direct sunlight can cause burns to orchid representatives.

These plants are watered abundantly (by immersion) with settled water, but not too often: once every four days in summer and once every seven days in winter. And remember that it is better to underfill than overfill. And one more thing: do not allow irrigation water to get into the growing point.
