In appearance it is similar to a palm tree: a thick trunk and spreading, hard and long leaves with pointed edges. Dracaena marginata also has a sister, Dracaena marginalata, it differs in that it has a red border, it can be wide or narrow. In the wild, this border is narrow and purple in color.

Humidity

To prevent the plant from drying out, a certain humidity is maintained in the house. Only Godsef calmly tolerates dry air from dracaenas; for everyone else, you need to stick to 60% . They especially often humidify the air when the heating is on.

If you see that the plant has begun to fade a little, watering it with a “hot shower”, which we wrote about just above, will help bring the plant back to life. The main thing is to leave the dracaena longer after bathing to saturate itself with the evaporation of moisture. If possible, you can purchase a humidifier.

Dracaena received this name due to its flowering, the flowers of which have a pleasant aroma. The fragrant dracaena reaches 2 meters, it has wide and long (about 60 cm) green leaves. Fragrant dracaena blooms only in nature; at home, flowering appears very rarely.

How to trim

When plants become stretched and lose their outer beauty, they need pruning. It is carried out with a very sharp and disinfected knife . Measure 20 cm from the top of the trunk and cut it at a right angle, immerse the end of the cut in a rooting agent and plant it in a mixture of vermiculite and perlite (drainage is placed at the bottom of the pot). Then cover the cuttings with a greenhouse, any bag will do, and leave for 30 days.

Water such cuttings once a week in a tray without opening it. Cuts on dracaena hemp are treated with crushed coal, cinnamon, or better yet, melted paraffin. Otherwise, they may rot or begin to dry out. You can cover the stump with moss and wrap it in polyethylene, this will help the cut grow faster. After some time, new shoots will appear on the stump. And little by little the beauty of the old dracaena will be restored.

We can say that watering dracaena is considered almost the most important point in caring for dracaena at home. If you do not approach watering correctly, you can ruin your indoor plant. Any type of dracaena does not like excessive soil moisture. The exception is the tree of happiness (Dracaena Sandera), as it likes to be in water. In other dracaenas, the roots may begin to rot due to waterlogging.

How to water dracaena

Use boiled or filtered water that has stood for several days.

Pour the liquid into the pot from the top. This way the soil is moistened evenly. When watering through a tray, problems are possible: the lower layers of the substrate will become waterlogged, and the upper layers, on the contrary, will not receive enough moisture.

After 15–20 minutes, drain the water from the pan.

Water the dracaena when the soil in the pot is about half dry. Avoid drying out and waterlogging: they are equally dangerous.

Clean the leaves from dust every one and a half to two weeks. Use a soft damp cloth for this.

Or bathe the plant in a warm shower. At the same time, cover the pot with a bag or film to prevent moisture from getting into it.

For large-leaved species, after water procedures, remove excess moisture from the outlets with a cotton swab. Be careful not to damage the young leaves. If a little water remains, it’s okay: it will evaporate.

In winter, when the room is above 25 °C and the air is dry from the radiators, spray the plant once every couple of days.
