Variegated Buckeye Violets: Memory Lane, Sorcerer, Picotee Sweetheart, Magic Touch, Love's Caress, Eureka, Saucy Irish (P. Hancock)

Uzambara violets quickly and easily won the love of flower growers of the Old World, appearing at world flower exhibitions more than a hundred years ago.

These tropical beauties had all the prerequisites for growing in indoor collections:

  • magnificent leaf rosettes , giving the plant a decorative look and not taking up much space;
  • flexible nature and simple requirements for care regimens , allowing violets to adapt to the proposed conditions;
  • lush, spectacular and long-lasting flowering.

The hobby of European lovers of indoor plants was picked up by flower growers of the New World and soon Saintpaulias took their rightful place on almost every windowsill of American apartments.
Their popularity in the USA has reached enormous proportions ; numerous societies of violet lovers and schools based on selection rules began to be created here. At first, it was American breeders who actively registered new varieties of violets.

One of the leading breeders of Usambara violets is Pat Hancock from Middletown (Ohio) .

The master has created a huge number of varieties that successfully compete with varieties of other breeders at various exhibitions and are found in the collections of flower growers around the world.

Pat Hancock's selection of violets is designated by the proprietary prefix "Buckeye". The internationally recognized master creates exclusively variegated varieties of Saintpaulia, which are characterized by the indispensable symmetry of the contours of leaf rosettes.

The author borrowed the prefix “Buckeye” from an American tree, the name of which sounds like “deer’s eye” due to the outline of its nuts. In Russia, the tree is known as “horse chestnut”.

Buckeye violets featured in this article are: Memory Lane, Sorcerer, Picotee Sweetheart, Magic Touch, Love's Caress, Eureka, Saucy Irish (P. Hancock).

Violet Buckeye Love's Caress

Description

Based on the size of the leaf rosette, Saintpaulia is classified as a large standard type . Bushes of significant dimensions certainly have aligned contours, dense filling and an original pattern of leaf arrangement, formed according to a mosaic principle.

The leaf blades have an elongated-pointed configuration and are distinguished by an extruded venation graphic, a leathery surface structure, smooth or wavy-jagged edges and a dark green coloration with a more or less wide edged edging of stripes, strokes and spots of a cream color with pinkish tints.

The underside of the leaves has a reddish tint.

The violet blooms in bouquet type often and for long periods of time with the formation of a mass of large corollas of a simple or semi-double type on strong peduncles. The petals are characterized by abundant corrugation of the edges, which is more pronounced on the upper lobes of the flowers.

The buds are painted with transitions of lavender shades with a bright purple braid along the contour and the same fantasy touches across the entire surface. According to the varietal description, the formation of a greenish thin frill at the tips of the petals is possible.

Violet variety "Buckeye Loves Caress" is prone to frequent sporting . Sports can manifest themselves in two varieties:

  • with flowers of an even purple color with a slight salad border and without obvious speckles of fantasy;

  • with leaves of a lighter color and original corollas with a soft lilac tone, modest fantasy strokes and stripes, wavy-notched contours of the lower petals and two small rounded upper petals with a green fringe.

Features of maintenance and care

Due to its positive qualities, violet is good for growing in the collections of experienced flower growers and novice hobbyists .

The variety independently forms a leaf rosette , does not require special care, develops well and blooms luxuriantly with a minimum set of classical maintenance regimes.

Saintpaulia is resistant to temperature fluctuations , but does not like sudden changes in temperature and drafts. It prefers placement on shelves under fluorescent lamps, where it blooms much more luxuriantly and more readily.

CAREFULLY! With additional lighting, violets should be placed at a sufficient distance from the lamps, otherwise the variegated decorativeness of the leaves may disappear due to the strong light intensity.

The variety gives the first flowering earlier , then the formation of buds occurs with enviable consistency and short rest intervals. Varietal characteristics appear more clearly from flowering to flowering.

Reviews

Tamara Andreevna. “I’ve been collecting a collection of varieties from the Bakai line for a very long time. One of my favorites is the violet “Buckeye Loves Caress” - it is not whimsical, it grows and blooms actively and beautifully, each flower can please me for more than a month. And its colors never get boring.”

Pyotr Selivanovich. “At the exhibition I liked the Saintpaulia variety “Buckeye Loves Caress”. My wife tried to dissuade me for a long time because she had heard about the instability of the variety. I didn’t listen, bought a piece of paper and got a light sport as a result. But I liked him no less. I’ll leave it with you.”

Violet Buckeye Memory Lane

Description of the variety

Varietal violet from the category of rare specimens forms aligned leaf rosettes of significant dimensions , due to which it is classified as a large standard type.

A bush of fairly dense filling with a mosaic pattern forms on its own due to the beautiful arrangement of leaves in tiers.

The leaf blades are distinguished by an oval-pointed configuration , a shiny surface, a wavy jagged outline and a slight convexity of the edges.

The leaves are painted in a dark green color with bordering pinkish-beige variegation, the intensity of which decreases with age.

Violet flowering begins at an early age , the plant is able to immediately form huge buds. It blooms with corollas of semi-double fullness, colored with iridescent shades of pink and purple with a darker edging along the wavy contour of the petals.

Important! The violet perfectly maintains varietal characteristics and does not form sports.

Features of maintenance and care

A completely problem-free variety, but very rarely found in collections , it is ideal for gardeners with any experience with violets.

It forms a gorgeous rosette on its own, blooms in lush bouquets, and is not picky. Loves very nutritious soil ; on good soils it forms succulent foliage.

It is necessary to remember the nuances of caring for variegated varieties:

  • cool indoor microclimate;
  • minimal fertilizing with nitrogen;
  • control of lighting intensity.

With age, the variety loses its light pattern ; to restore the brightness of the variegated decorativeness of the leaves, the rejuvenation method should be used.

Reviews

Nina Konstantinovna. “The smooth contours of the rosette are the calling card of breeder Pat Hancock. I have about two dozen varieties of it in my collection, and I can’t complain about a single one. But the “Buckeye Memory Lane” violet is something special: it itself forms an ideal, show rosette of variegated colors. It’s good even without flowering, but when all the buds bloom, you can’t take your eyes off it. My favorite variety."

Olesya. “I love the Buckeye Memory Lane violet! Crazy beautiful rosette, not harmful, beautiful flowers! And he doesn’t give sports. What else is needed to make a violet grower happy?”

Violet Buckeye Saucy Irish

Description

Forming a leaf rosette of medium dimensions, violet can be classified as a standard type . The rosette is invariably symmetrical, with aligned contours and relatively dense filling. There is a mosaic principle in the arrangement of leaves in tiers .

The rounded-elongated leaf plates are characterized by a quilted, slightly pimply surface structure, a voluminous central vein of a salad shade, finely jagged contours and a dark green tone with a slight swamp tint and a beige edging of varying widths.

Photo of Buckeye Saucy Irish violet.

Violet blooms for a very long time (on average about 4 months) while maintaining the freshness of each flower. An impressive cap of a bluish-lilac hue is formed from a mass of small-diameter terry-filled corollas.

The wavy petals of the corollas, as if cast from wax, have a whitish coating on the outside, and along the edges there is a white outline, turning into a greenish tint. Blooming varietal violet vaguely resembles terry lilac.

No sports were observed in the variety.

Features of maintenance and care

Violet is excellent for growing indoors :

  • grows quickly;
  • forms itself;
  • blooms with numerous buds on strong peduncles;
  • very prolific and willingly produces many children on leaf cuttings and stepsons on the mother specimen;
  • The characteristics of the variety appear much more clearly with age.

ATTENTION! The “Buckeye Saucy Irish” variety perfectly withstands high thermometer readings, the main thing is to avoid sudden temperature changes and cooling the plant with drafts. This threatens the violet with loss of decorativeness and health.

Saintpaulia has a minor drawback - at the beginning of the formation of a rosette, under intense lighting, the leaves can curl down, hugging the flowerpot . The solution to the problem is to use a rosette corset and place the plant on a shelf where there is not such an abundant flow of light.

Reviews

Alexander Petrovich. “The variety “Buckeye Saucy Irish” became the first in my sector with Buckeyes. Gorgeous violet. True, it caused some problems when growing up; I really wanted to hug the flowerpot. I had to put a petticoat on her. But other than that, everything is perfect.”

Olga Vasilievna. “My favorite, the Buckeye Saucy Irish violet, pleases with its lilac heads for three to four months in a row. Its wonderful cap of double flowers looks good against the background of a variegated rosette. And it doesn’t require extra care.”

Violet Buckeye Sorcerer

Description

Saintpaulia with its medium-sized leaf rosette is described as a standard type. The bush fully corresponds to the varietal characteristics:

  • smooth contours;
  • symmetrical configuration;
  • dense fullness;
  • mosaic tiered arrangement of leaves.

The leaf blades have an oval-elongated shape, a pronounced central vein of a lighter shade, a smooth surface structure and a pronounced variegated color: the main background color is dark green and the bordering stripe of strokes and spots of an intense beige shade.

With very abundant formation of buds, violets never bloom in a cap type, only in a wreath . Due to weak peduncles, the corollas fall on the leaves of the rosette during the blooming process.

The opening of the buds takes long periods of time, which increases the overall flowering period.

The variety is distinguished by the original shape of the corolla , in the dissolution phase it looks like a half-bell, and in the full opening phase it resembles a lotus flower.

The color of the corollas is presented in two tones: the petals, white with a slight lilac tint, have triangles at the edges of a richer shade of lilac. Sometimes a green edging appears along the edge of the petals .

No sports were found in this variety.

Features of maintenance and care

The variety is inconvenient for breeding by beginners , as it belongs to the group of violet whims :

  • with the slightest changes in care regimens, it stops its development;
  • in intense lighting, the leaves strive to hug the flowerpot;
  • lack of light can lead to elongation of leaf petioles;
  • Flowering in a wreath predominates, the buds lie on the leaves.

Due to so many maintenance problems, violets are rarely found in collections and are little known to flower growers . But with proper care, taking into account all the nuances, this is a completely show-worthy, delicate and pretty variety.

Reviews

Varvara. “My violet “Buckeye Sorcerer” has been growing beautifully for the fourth year now, I haven’t noticed any special problems. Saintpaulia formed the rosette herself, it turned out beautiful, completely smooth. It blooms for a long time, with delicate flowers that do not stand upright and fall on the leaves. But this is its only drawback."

Galina Antonovna. “The Buckeye Sorcerer variety is rare, they say it is very capricious. But I would like to try to tame him. I’m writing to your wishlist.”

Stanczyk (Court Jester Stanislav Huska)

The painting “Stanczyk” by Jan Matejko often serves as an illustration for articles about romanticism in art: the artist shows the experiences of the main character in an unusually expressive way. “Stanczyk” (the full title of the painting is “Stanczyk at the Court of Queen Bona after the Capture of Smolensk”) is one of the first artistic historical works of Jan Matejko. The canvas was painted in 1862, its author was only 24 years old. Stanczyk is a historical figure: he was the court jester of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and the Kings of Poland Alexander Jagiellon, Sigismund I the Old and Sigismund II Augustus. According to scant information, his real name is Stanislav Gusa, or Stanislav Vassota. He was born around 1480 in the village of Proszowice near Krakow, and was called Stanczyk, shortening the name “Stanislav”.

Once at court, Stanczyk became the royal jester, did not mince words and quickly became a popular person. Wit and clarity of thinking, coupled with his peculiar “official duties,” allowed Stanczyk not only to mercilessly criticize kings and courtiers, but also to occupy a rather privileged position in Wawel Castle.

However, in the picture we see a sad jester: Jan Matejko captured his Stanczyk at the moment when he mourns the defeat of the Lithuanian army near Smolensk. This is evidenced by the word “Smolensk” and the Roman numerals “1514” depicted on the letter we just read. The most important fortress in the east has been lost, it was captured by the troops of Moscow Prince Vasily III, but no one seems to care about this except the jester. It is unlikely that Stanczyk himself opened the important letter - this was done by one of the nobles, perhaps Queen Bona herself (remember the full title of the picture). Behind the slightly open doors on the right you can see the figures of the courtiers - a cheerful ball is noisy there. And only Stanczyk, throwing his jester’s caduceus on the floor, reflects on the future of the state and its gloomy prospects. Matejko emphasizes the anxiety of the moment by depicting a flying comet in the window on the left - a harbinger of wars and troubled times. Also, the light falling on Stanczyk’s figure has no visible source - perhaps it is the “light of truth” - “luх veritatis”.

The character’s look, full of pain and anxiety, is the look of the author of the picture, Jan Matejko, who “copied” the image of Stanczyk from his own appearance. He would depict his face more than once: almost immediately after “Stanczyk,” the artist began work on the painting “Skarga’s Sermon” (completed in 1864), where the image of the central figure is also a self-portrait. Portraying himself in the role of a jester, witty, quick with a caustic word, or a priest, angrily preaching from the altar, Matejko thereby emphasizes the spirit of national patriotism that lives in his heart, identifying himself with his heroes. The love for Poland, where the Matejko family of emigrants found their real homeland, was real and sincere. Jan’s two older brothers took part in the revolutionary events of the “Spring of Nations” in 1848, and another older brother, Franciszek Matejko, a historian by training, instilled in him an interest in antiquity and folk traditions. And Krakow itself, with its medieval architecture, the Royal Castle and the tombs of Polish rulers, contributed to the passion for national patriotic ideas.

The painting “Stanczyk” clearly shows that it was not for nothing that Jan Matejko studied the principle of work of Paul Delaroche and his student Carl Theodor von Piloty - to depict on canvas the most dramatic moment of a historical event, awakening the maximum emotion in the audience.

The bright personality of Stanczyk, a jester and a true patriot, inspired not only the painter: Polish writers paid tribute to him in their works on historical topics. And a political group that operated in the mid-19th century in Galicia and advocated for improving the lives of Poles under the heel of the Austrian occupation chose the name “Stanczyki”.

Violet Buckeye Picotee Sweetheart

Description

Saintpaulia is a representative of the large standard type , since the leaf rosette it forms passes along the largest numerical value of the permissible diameter.

The contour of the rosette is leveled, slightly loose due to the elongated leaf petioles.

The quilted leaves are dark green in color with a hint of marsh color, with a lighter venation pattern and a pinkish-beige border. The edge of the leaf has a wavy structure and finely cut serrations, and the reverse side has a reddish tint.

Flowering occurs according to the cap type . The violet forms many corollas of simple or semi-double fullness. The volume of the buds is increased due to the thick fringe, colored in a dark lilac tone.

The main shade of the corollas is pink, tinted with spots of dark fantasy. There may be a greenish edge running along the fringed edge.

Features of maintenance and care

Violet is ideal for keeping in collections of any type and as an exhibition plant. Doesn't like surprises, isn't picky, grows quickly and independently, blooms luxuriantly and according to variety.

To maintain the decorative appearance of Saintpaulia with its magnificent pinkish pattern on the leaf blades, it is necessary to keep the room cool and carefully control fertilizing with nitrogen - when overfeeding, a large amount of chlorophyll is formed, the variegated leaf pattern changes color or completely disappears.

ADVICE! When illuminating, it is necessary to avoid intense lighting at close range, as this will reduce the variegated characteristics of the violet.

Reviews

Sergey Vladimirovich. “I grow only classic variegated varieties of violets - I absolutely love the combination of a light pattern on dark foliage with a mass of magnificent buds. And classic - because it is a time-tested variety, without surprises. Saintpaulia 'Buckeye Picotee Sweetheart' is my favorite: it has a show rosette and gorgeous flowers.”

Alena Igorevna. “I would like to remind beginners that when growing Buckeye Picotee Sweetheart violets, you should pay special attention to creating a cool microclimate and place the backlight lamps away from the flowerpots. This will preserve the variegated graphics of the leaves.”

Violet Buckeye Magic Touch

Description

The violet forms, with aligned outlines, a chic leaf rosette of the large standard type , which has a dense filling and a tiled structure based on the principle of a mosaic arrangement of leaves on each tier.

The leaf plates have rounded outlines, wavy-jagged contours, original venation graphics on a smooth surface and a dark green color with a whitish-beige edging with pink reflections.

The variegated pattern changes its tone with age towards darkening.

Flowering occurs in a bouquet type , for a long time, but with large rest intervals.

Significantly sized corollas-stars of simple and semi-double fullness are distinguished by iridescent shades of pink, a fringed edge of the petals, dense fantasy speckling of a crimson tone throughout the flower and a frame of the same shade along the contour.

Important! The varietal characteristics of violets intensify as the plant matures.

The variety does not show sports.

Features of maintenance and care

The variety can be recommended for keeping in the collections of experienced flower growers and as the first plant for beginning violet growers:

  • is not picky about conditions of detention;
  • grows well, but at a slow pace;
  • independently forms a leaf rosette;
  • produces a large number of children.

The violet has a small drawback - it can slightly tuck the leaves down towards the flowerpot .

This is corrected by using a rosette corset.

Conditions comfortable for Saintpaulia are created taking into account all the nuances of keeping variegated varieties:

  • control of cool microclimate;
  • the brightness of the lighting;
  • for fertilizing with nitrogen.

The shade of the variegated pattern depends on the location of the violet:

  • on the shelf it is pinkish;
  • on the windowsill shifts towards a beige palette.

Reviews

Vera Pavlovna. “With the charming Saintpaulia “Buckeye Magic Touch” she has participated in exhibitions more than once and won prizes. I recommend this variety for home collections.”

Nikolai Fedorovich. “I like the violet “Buckeye Magic Touch” for its active fantasy colors and the size of the buds. The simple shape of the stars doesn’t scare me; I’m a supporter of the classics.”

Violet Buckeye Eureka

Description

The violet rosette is formed according to the standard type. The bush invariably has a leveled configuration, dense filling according to the tiled principle of building tiers.

The leaf blades are distinguished by a rounded shape, a clear venation pattern with an emerald central vein, a glossy surface and a tone of summer greenery with a cream edging of varying widths.

The violet blooms with large-diameter stars of single or semi-double filling with a wavy contour of the petals, tints of a dim lilac-pinkish palette, a whitish back side of the flowers and bright, fancy specks and strokes over the entire surface, often uniting into solid purple stripes.

NOTABLE! The variety "Buckeye Eureka" can sometimes form sports with simple corolla stars of an even, purple hue and without fancy patterns. The changes do not affect sheet plates.

Features of maintenance and care

Violet can be easily kept in indoor collections by both experienced gardeners and novice hobbyists :

  • does not require special care methods;
  • is formed independently;
  • It does not bloom in bouquets very often, but it is lush and beautiful.

The main advice is to follow the care regimens prescribed for variegated varieties . This means controlling light, providing cool conditions, and feeding nitrogen only in small doses.

Reviews

Ilya Andreevich. “The Buckeye Eureka violet has been in my collection for a long time. When it is propagated by leaf cuttings, among several children blooming according to the variety, a sporty one without fantasy and a darker color will certainly slip through. It looks nice, and there are always homes for it.”

Svetlana. “I am crazy about the Buckeye Eureka violet: in my opinion, this is the most gorgeous Saintpaulia of all the Buckeyes. I advise everyone to try growing it.”
