Why do this?
Indoor hibiscus requires pruning for a number of reasons:
- To remove shoots that have acquired an unaesthetic shape, bent and shortened under the influence of time.
- To give the hibiscus shape. After the procedure, he actively grows new shoots.
- For rejuvenation. To get rid of old dried twigs.
- To remove diseased shoots. This is the so-called sanitary pruning, when the affected parts are cut off with a slight inclusion of healthy parts.
- So that the hibiscus actively develops and blooms profusely.
If hibiscus is not pruned at home, the formation of side branches, buds and flowers will stop. Hibiscus flowers can only appear on young shoots.
Why is pruning needed?
Although garden hibiscus does not cause much trouble for gardeners, there are still some mandatory measures that guarantee its full growth and abundant flowering. First of all, this is an annual pruning of the plant. It is necessary for:
Giving a beautiful shape to the bush. By carrying out formative pruning, we can give the plant the desired crown shape. It will not be collapsed or lopsided.
The splendor of flowering. The fact is that flowers appear only on the tops of young branches. Therefore, the more fresh shoots, the more blossoming buds.
Whole plant growth. By pruning (corrective or strong) we stimulate the renewal process of hibiscus
This is especially important if the flower dies for some reason.
Bush rejuvenation. By pruning old and diseased branches, we rejuvenate the bush
Removing dry branches frees up space and preserves strength for the development of young shoots.
If you ignore the pruning procedure, the plant will begin to wither, bloom worse, and over time may even die.
Pruning a home flower
How can you prune a house flower? Depending on the age of the plant, its condition and the expected shape of the crown, there are 5 types of pruning:
- Pinching is suitable for young plants.
- This is the most gentle type of pruning.
- Used to stimulate growth.
- It consists of removing the tops of all branches above the top node.
- You need to pinch when the plant is about 13 - 15 cm high.
- To strengthen the trunk when pinching, the central shoot is attached to a base (for example, to a bamboo skewer).
- Selective pruning is done not only to stimulate growth, but also to maintain the shape of the plant. This type of pruning is a more thorough shortening of branches: several already well-developed internodes are cut off. Certain areas that disrupt the shape of the crown are trimmed.
The sequence of this type of hibiscus pruning is as follows:- Trim the side shoots, leaving up to 4 - 5 leaves.
Make the cut just above the node, leaving at least 2/3 of the branch.
- Branches growing parallel to the central trunk and inside the crown also need to be pruned.
- Pruning should be done above the growing point, which faces outward.
Reference: the cut is made at an angle of 45 degrees. - Full pruning ensures abundant flowering of the plant. Produced in early spring to obtain abundant flowering. When fully pruned, each branch is shortened to two to three buds.
- Sanitary pruning involves removing disease-damaged areas of the plant. The cut is made until living wood appears. If the cut is green, then the branch is alive. A brown and white branch cut requires immediate pruning.
When pruning, do not try to leave as many shoots as possible. Don't be afraid to trim! Even if you cut off the excess, the plant will survive everything. Pruning tools must be sharp and disinfected.
How to trim correctly?
All gardeners (even beginners) know that ornamental bushes need pruning. But not everyone knows how to do this correctly in the spring and after flowering has ended. But this event must be approached with all seriousness, as if it were a real medical procedure:
- Before starting work, all equipment must be thoroughly disinfected. This will reduce the risk of plant disease.
- Also make sure that the tools are well sharpened. Dull blades will only damage the plant.
Necessary materials
To carry out pruning you will need a standard gardener's kit:
- gardening scissors;
- well sharpened knife;
- lopper;
- hand saw.
All this equipment can be found in the arsenal of any amateur gardener. However, if the tools are old or simply dull, take the time to bring them into working condition.
Step-by-step instruction
So, you have become the happy owner of a beautiful plant - garden hibiscus. With tenderness and dreams of a lush waterfall of flowering on six acres, you planted it in your favorite corner of your garden. When to start pruning this still tiny bush:
For young or very small plants, we carry out the pinching procedure. Its essence is to cut off the very tops of the branches. This stimulates their growth. We do not touch the main shoot (the future trunk) for now. We carry out the next stage of pruning only after a year. In early spring, we remove overgrown side shoots again. But now we are shortening the trunk itself - to the fifth bud. This pruning is done for several years in a row until the plant reaches the size you need. But now the bush has grown stronger and stronger. The time has come to form its crown. This is the so-called selective pruning. It involves cutting off most of the plant.
In this case, it is important to follow certain rules: The branch must be cut at an angle of 45 degrees, slightly above the node, by about 5-6 mm. The lower edges of the cuts should look inside the bush, and the upper edges should look out. You should not remove too many branches in one pruning, but no more than 2/3 of the entire crown
Otherwise the plant will weaken. The branches need to be trimmed so that the central shoot remains longer than the side branches. And those, in turn, were different in height. This is how a beautiful bush shape is formed.
Sometimes the bush is completely pruned at the beginning of the season. This is done to obtain lush summer flowering. With this method, only 2-3 buds are left on the branches. A diseased or dying plant requires corrective pruning. The shoot must be cut until young green wood appears. But if the branch is light and dry at the cut site, it means that it is already dead and needs to be removed. Heavy pruning is only used if the bush is severely damaged or almost dead. The plant is pruned completely to the base. This is not a guarantee that it will come to life in the new season, but you can still try to revive your favorite flower.
How to form a crown at home?
Formative pruning is the most difficult type of hibiscus pruning.
Purpose of the procedure and the best time for it
The Chinese rose is formed in order to obtain the desired shape of the crown and the entire plant. The more often the crown can be shaped by pruning, the better the plant will develop and achieve the correct shape.
They begin to form a crown in the spring, after the plant’s dormant period ends. The shape of the hibiscus is maintained through selective pruning.
How to trim a bush correctly in spring?
The rules for pruning hibiscus depend on what type of crown is expected to be obtained after the procedure. It can be a lush tree, a branched shrub, or a miniature bush.
- To form a Chinese rose in the form of a tree, you should:
- Remove side branches.
- Leave a couple of medium branches, shortening them by only 2 - 3 buds. In the future this will be the main trunk.
- To form a hibiscus in the form of a lush bush you need:
- Trim the middle-most upper branches. At the same time, the lateral buds will begin to form new shoots.
- Shorten the central branch, leaving only a few growing points.
- To form a lush crown:
- Remove all useless branches: internal, parallel to the main trunk, gnarled, deformed and growing inward.
- Clear the crown of faded flowers in a timely manner. This promotes the development and blooming of new buds.
Spring pruning of garden hibiscus
Syrian hibiscus, or garden tree hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus) is perhaps the only type of flowering shrub from the hibiscus genus that grows well and winters in our latitudes. Young plants (first or second year of life) must be protected from frost by mulching during the winter, but older plants are not afraid of frost. However, give your garden hibiscus the sunniest, warmest place with a comfortable microclimate, and it will thank you with bright greenery and lush flowering.
Formative haircut for young hibiscus
Immediately after planting a young hibiscus, remove all weak and damaged shoots. For the uniform development of a young, lush bush in subsequent years, it needs radical pruning. If you want to form a standard hibiscus tree, you will have to be patient, since growing a beautiful standard can take more than one year.
It will be enough if there are 2-3 eyes left on each shoot from last year.
Formation of a trunk
After planting young hibiscus, shorten the branched branches to the level of 2-3 buds. A well-developed main trunk is not pruned. In subsequent years, starting in February, again prune the branched side shoots to one bud, and the main shoot to the level of 5-6 buds. When the plant reaches the height you need, form a crown from the strongest shoots, shortening them by several buds, trimming the top of the trunk and removing all the lower side shoots.
Maintenance pruning of hibiscus
If you have achieved the desired crown shape, in the future trim only weak and dry shoots. Trim thin shoots to the level of several buds. If your garden hibiscus becomes lopsided with age, remove unwanted shoots to the base of the bush or prune them back to the level of young side shoots.
Hygienic pruning to stimulate flowering
In early spring, the growth of last year is shortened by one third. This significantly increases the number of flower buds set. Since the Syrian hibiscus bush becomes denser over time, it needs regular, light thinning.
To stimulate the formation of flower buds in early spring, radically prune annual shoots
Maintenance pruning of hibiscus on a trunk
The crown of the formed standard hibiscus is allowed to grow freely in subsequent years, or it is treated like a topless willow, at the beginning of each spring, shortening all last year's shoots, leaving several buds on each, to powerful skeletal branches.
Rejuvenating haircut
If the hibiscus bush grows unevenly and one-sidedly or has become too large, it needs a rejuvenating pruning. Let him breathe more freely, let him re-grow new, fresh greenery. To do this, remove all too old, dead shoots, and shorten the remaining ones by two-thirds. This also applies to shoots inside the bush.
Tip: When performing anti-aging pruning, do not trim all the branches so that their tops are at the same height! Leave the central shoot longer, and trim the side shoots around it to different heights. This way you will give the Syrian hibiscus a beautiful shape.

How to form a crown correctly?
There are two ways to form a hibiscus crown: a lush crown and a horizontal one.
A lush crown must be formed more carefully and more often than a horizontal one. Here is what someone likes best, what suits the interior best, and so on.
One of the advantages of hibiscus is that it allows you to have both a lush crown and a tall tree.
Trim with ordinary scissors - the flower branches are too thin for pruning shears.
It is necessary to cut off shoots growing parallel to the main branches. All dry branches must also be removed.
In order for the plant to become lush, it must be pruned as follows: take an area about 1/3 above the leaf facing outward and cut it off.
Hibiscus should be pruned every year in the spring. In autumn, after each flowering, the plant also needs pruning. If this is not done, the side shoots will not grow and there will be no new buds or flowers. Moreover, hibiscus flowers appear only on young shoots.
Therefore, in order for it to bloom, you need to prune it as often as possible. In addition, the crown of the plant will become thicker and more spreading.
It is not recommended to prune in summer - this way you will not get flowers.
All about caring for indoor hibiscus, pruning and shaping Chinese roses
Hibiscus or Chinese rose (Hibiscus rosa-chinensis), a common houseplant with large, beautiful funnel-shaped flowers.
Many decorative varieties with different colors will perfectly take root at home. If you follow simple rules for caring for hibiscus, the rose will begin to bloom soon enough.
Necessary conditions for keeping hibiscus or how to take care of a flower... Your flower with the wonderful name “Hibiscus”, in addition to its beauty, will thank you for your care and attention, effectively clearing the air space in the room and will also have a beneficial effect on indoor flowers growing next to it!
Basic care and maintenance of hibiscus...
Hibiscus is a heat-loving plant and feels very comfortable at temperatures from 18 to 22°C, but blooms well and for a long time mostly at 14-15°C. Based on this, if at the end of the hot summer it is possible to place the bush in a cooler but brighter room, then it will not be slow to respond to this with its flowering. In the summer, it is great to take the hibiscus out into fresh air, ideally onto a veranda or balcony, just avoiding drafts.
— Lighting for hibiscus.
Prefers sun rays from the south side. In hot weather, the plant should be moved away from the glass or shaded. The best option is a high stand in front of the window. Home hibiscus will instantly respond to insufficient light by “falling leaves” or dropping buds.
— Watering and humidity.
Chinese rose is very dependent on timely watering and regular spraying. Water for irrigation must be at room temperature, settled, and must be in an open glass container with a wide neck. If the room is too hot, then it is necessary to prevent the liquid from evaporating from the ground - cover it with small expanded clay or moss.
The most important thing for rose leaves is constant spraying with a spray bottle or regular operation of a humidifier in the room. It is prohibited to spray hibiscus flowers. During the heating season, it is possible to place containers of water on warm radiators.
Hibiscus loves to “take a shower” in the bathroom. Carefully wash off the dust from the leaves with hot water, just to avoid over-wetting the earthen ball, wrap the pot in a plastic bag and tie it.
How to overcome difficulties in growing hibiscus.
Hibiscus is “not capricious” in home care, and if you make any mistakes, they are very easy to correct, and the flower will immediately respond to the transformation. At first I was quite upset that the rose was losing its leaves. But our long life together has taught me to spray the leaves more often when they look a little droopy. At the end of a long flowering period, the hibiscus also sheds its old leaves, but at the same time immediately grows new ones.
Yellowed leaves of the Chinese rose indicate that water for irrigation needs to be more carefully filtered and settled in order to reduce the chlorine content. If there is a brown border on the yellowed leaves, it means that your fertilizer contains too much nitrogen, stop feeding the flower for a while.
With a sharp change in maintenance conditions, the hibiscus can completely shed not only the buds, but also the leaves, taking on a heavily “naked” appearance, but soon new leaves will appear on it.
How to “force” hibiscus to bloom?
Many people wonder why it doesn’t bloom and how to properly care for hibiscus... It’s all simple! Replace the soil with fresh soil, cut off the old branches and place the plant in the sunniest place. This way, you will achieve stimulation of young shoots and buds on which flowering will occur.
Only young shoots bloom on hibiscus, so do not be afraid to prune after leaving a couple of buds. If you don’t trim the old branches several times, the flowers become smaller and then disappear altogether.
And one more important point: if it was hot in your house in the summer, and the heating season does not start for a long time in the autumn, or the hibiscus is in a cool room, then very soon it will form buds and throw out the most beautiful flowers. On the contrary, if the hibiscus was too hot during the winter, then there is a huge chance that it will begin to bloom in the spring.
I also have a little secret: when replanting a flower again, take a wooden sliver up to 10 cm long and insert it into the ground in a pot, at a short distance from the hibiscus trunk. It may seem like a joke, but this “grandmother’s method” helps my hibiscus bloom for a long time: every morning a new flower blooms, falls off in the evening, and the next morning the next bud blooms.
Forming your own flower - pruning hibiscus.
The advantage of hibiscus is that when pruning a flower, we choose whether to grow a lush bush or a small tree. So, I started growing my Chinese rose on a narrow windowsill, and later, when I moved into my personal home, the rose instantly turned into a spreading bush in front of the window.
Every spring, hibiscus is subjected to formative pruning - until the plant begins to grow, or in the autumn - after flowering has ended. Long shoots are shortened to stimulate branching. If you prune the bush too late, for example in May, you may not be able to wait for flowering in the summer. At other times, it is necessary to ensure that there are no buds on the pruned shoots.
For pruning, it is more ergonomic to use scissors; hibiscus branches are too thin for using pruning shears. Woody shoots that grow parallel to the main branches are pruned; in addition, all dried branches need to be cut off.
Features of holding at different times of the year
in spring
The flower of the Chinese Rose is formed at the very top of the shoot (young), it turns out that the more our plant begins to bush, the more magnificent it will bloom.
Therefore, there is no need to be afraid to remove excess; after pruning, the bush will produce many new shoots and branches, at the ends of which buds will form. However, there are still some restrictions - it is undesirable to trim more than 2/3 of the total volume of the plant. It is important to decide on the desired shape of the bush before starting the procedure, and not during the process, in order to avoid mistakes. The pruning location should be above the outward-facing bud, and the cut should be made at a 45-degree angle.
In the spring, the bush is usually completely pruned, that is, all branches are shortened by 2/3. It is imperative to remove all the “tops” growing parallel to the main stem and branches that grow inside the crown.
IMPORTANT! Pruning tools must be very sharp and clean! The cut area should be smooth, not torn.
in autumn
Carried out after flowering has completely completed, you need to shorten all the branches that were blooming. Usually, formative pruning is carried out in the fall, that is, by 1/3 of the length of the branches. If you are growing a small plant and do not want it to grow, then you will have to shorten the entire crown - all the branches.
All broken and diseased branches (if any) are removed; it is also necessary to remove the tops if they appear again. There is another option - in the fall you can cut the plant down to the stump (leave about 5 cm) and put it in a cool place in the shade, and in the spring it will begin to grow vigorously.
Chinese rose: when and how best to prune indoor hibiscus
Hibiscus is the most common indoor plant, despite the fact that it requires attention and proper care. I have been growing Chinese roses for several years now, so I know this firsthand. The main stage in care is crown formation or pruning. If everything is done correctly, your plant can live for about twenty years. So, let's look at some rules and timing for pruning.
Why is hibiscus pruned?
Pruning is vital for hibiscus for many reasons:
- Relieves the plant of deformed branches. As hibiscus grows, underdeveloped and twisted shoots appear. If you remove them in time, then full-fledged shoots will appear in this place.
- Gives the bush the desired shape. Indoor hibiscus, growing without proper care, will not be able to please you with a rich crown. The plant will devote all its energy to old and weak growth, flowering will become scarce, and over time it will disappear altogether.
- Rejuvenation. As a plant ages, it produces a lot of dead branches; pruning allows you to remove the excess and rejuvenate the plant, giving it a good boost.
- Removing diseased branches. Regular and timely sanitation will rid the plant of branches damaged by diseases and pests. This pruning will prevent the disease from spreading to healthy shoots.
- Root trimming. This event is carried out only in cases where the roots of the Chinese rose have grown greatly and it is crowded in the container. Root pruning promotes good growth and promotes lush flowering.
Terms and rules for pruning hibiscus
There are a number of requirements for regular pruning of hibiscus. They may differ depending on the purpose of the haircut.
Crown forming
The crown of hibiscus can be of different shapes. If you want to have a bush with a rich crown, then be prepared to pay more attention to the plant and carry out frequent pruning. What the crown of your plant will be like is up to you to choose. As a rule, it depends on the environment. The peculiarity of the Chinese rose is that the richness of the crown does not depend on the height of the plant.
For pruning, it is better to use simple scissors, since hibiscus branches are thin and can be damaged by pruning shears. All dried shoots should be removed, as well as those that grow parallel to others.
Routine pruning of hibiscus in the fall is carried out immediately after the plant stops blooming. This procedure can also be performed in the spring, before flowering begins. The rest of the time, pruning can lead to a slowdown or complete cessation of growth and flowering.
Pinching shoots
Conduct to all young shoots. It is best to perform pinching in the spring before the leaves begin to form, following the rules:
- the central shoot must be given support (this can be a simple pencil or a ready-made support made of bamboo or plastic);
- cut off all the branches on the sides, leaving about five leaves;
- periodically feed the hibiscus with nitrogen;
- after your bush reaches the required height, pinch its crown, leaving a few of the strongest shoots;
To get a rich and dense crown, trim branches parallel to the main ones.
Trimming to shape
After the plant is planted, damaged and twisted branches are removed from it. Carrying out this procedure will allow the young bush to develop evenly. Be patient, it will take a long time to grow a flowering tree with a beautiful shape.
Form support
This type of pruning is performed after you have received the crown of the required shape. All dried and underdeveloped branches are removed, and thin ones are cut to the level of two or three buds.
Over time, hibiscus may begin to develop unevenly. The problem can be solved by removing all unnecessary branches from the desired side to the very base of the plant.
Creating a standard
All branched shoots are removed from the planted young bush, the trunk is not touched. Subsequently, branched branches are also removed, only at the level of one bud. Pruning is done until the hibiscus reaches the required height. The crown should be formed from the strongest and most developed shoots. Lateral growth should be removed regularly.
Pruning for hygienic purposes
Carried out with the arrival of spring. All of last year's growth is cut by a third. This type of pruning allows you to free the plant from deformed and old shoots, which will give more luxuriant and longer flowering. The Chinese rose quickly acquires a dense crown; an excess of branches can interfere with the development of flowers, so periodically the plant requires slight thinning.
Pruning for hibiscus rejuvenation
If the hibiscus develops one-sidedly, then the shoots should be trimmed. This pruning gives the tree new strength, stimulating further growth and flowering. This procedure should be carried out in two stages:
- Remove old and all dried shoots.
- Shorten the remaining branches by 2/3.
This pruning concerns not only the external branches, but also those located inside the plant. In order for the bush to acquire an aesthetic appearance, the shoots must be trimmed to different lengths. The branches that are in the center are left longer than on the sides. Timely pruning and proper care will make your tree not only attractive and blooming, but also increase its lifespan.
Pruning old and new plants - is there a difference?
Of course, there is a difference between pruning an old mature plant and a new young one, let's figure it out /p>
- Pruning a new plant - a young new bush requires gentle pruning, which is called pinching. After all, for such a plant there is no need yet to carry out serious pruning to stimulate the growth of new young shoots. In a young bush, you need to pinch the very tips of all the branches above the top bud and this will be enough.
- Pruning an old plant - it requires more drastic pruning - or shortening all shoots by 2/3, or in some cases, the Chinese Rose is almost completely cut off, leaving a small stump (in the fall). So from such a stump, one might say, from the roots, a new strong plant grows - the Chinese Rose has such a unique ability. Thanks to pruning, the old bush undergoes a rejuvenation procedure, a powerful impetus is given for the growth of young shoots and the quality of flowering increases.
Methods of rejuvenation and culture formation
Trimming and shaping hibiscus is carried out using the following methods:
This gentle method stimulates the growth of young plants. In this case, only the top of the strongest shoot is removed, on which numerous young branches will grow, forming the crown.
Selective or complete pruning of shoots
The method is carried out at the beginning of the growing season; it is necessary for the formation of a lush crown of a tree or bush on all sides, when the plant produces young shoots.
Remove diseased branches, non-viable ones, those with foci of fungal and pest damage, as well as dry leaves and frostbitten branches. The branches are shortened to the living lignified part, on which shoots will later grow: new and young.
Strong shortening to a stump
They severely prune a dying plant, which cannot cope with diseases and pests and does not respond to all resuscitation measures: fertilizing, watering, lighting, pollination with insecticides, etc. This removes foliage and damaged parts of the plant, leaving viable buds at the base of the roots.
How to prune a plant correctly?
The procedure depends on the goals of the procedure.
Formation of the crown of indoor hibiscus
The crown of hibiscus can come in a wide variety of shapes.
The option is selected depending on the interior of the room and the aesthetic preferences of the plant owner. Some time after pruning, new shoots begin to appear on the Chinese rose, which will create a beautiful crown.
- Non-viable dry shoots and branches growing parallel to others are pruned.
- Weak, deformed, damaged shoots must also be removed.
Maintenance haircut
Performed after the desired crown type has been achieved.
- Weak and dried shoots are cut out.
- All thin branches are cut to the level of 2-3 buds.
- If the Chinese rose has acquired a one-sided appearance, all unwanted shoots are removed to the very base of the bush.
Formation of a trunk
It is carried out after planting a Chinese rose.
- All branched shoots are removed to the level of 2-3 buds.
- The main developed trunk does not need to be trimmed.
- In February, all side shoots are removed to the level of 1 bud, and the main trunk is pruned to the level of 5-6 buds.
- Pruning is carried out until the plant of the desired height is obtained.
- A crown is formed from the strongest young branches; further pruning is carried out into several buds.
- Lateral growth must be constantly removed.
Removing branches for sanitary purposes
- Time: early spring.
- All branches that have grown over the previous year are cut off by a third.
Rejuvenating haircut
- All old and dead parts are removed.
- The remaining shoots are cut by two thirds.
- Pruning should affect not only the external branches, but also those located inside the bush.
Important! For all types of Chinese rose pruning, only scissors or a sharp blade are used. The branches of the plant are too thin; pruning shears can damage them. The cuts are made at an angle of forty-five degrees and after the procedure is completed, they are sprinkled with charcoal.
Why does the flower wither after the procedure, and what to do?
A hibiscus may not tolerate pruning well if the cut was made to the bare stump, when the crown and leaves were removed and the stems were left completely without leaves. Such branches, as a rule, dry out, the buds on them do not wake up, or they can dry out after a while.
Also, the problem of poor health of the flower after pruning may lie in an incorrectly selected tool with which the shoots of the Chinese rose were damaged (read about the problems of maintaining the Chinese rose, diseases and pests here). To revive the hibiscus, you need to radically remove all dry and diseased parts with a suitable tool, and trim the remaining shoots so that at least two or three leaves remain at the ends of the branches.
If you know how to prune a Chinese rose correctly and do it regularly, you can get a living interior element that is unsurpassed in originality and brightness.
Features of crown formation
How to prune hibiscus correctly to give the correct shape? There are two ways to form a crown: in the first case, we get a spreading crown, in the second, a horizontal one. The formation of hibiscus allows you to have a lush crown and a flowering slender tree. How to make a shaping haircut? You can choose the shape based on personal preferences or in accordance with the design of the room.
The procedure is carried out with ordinary scissors, since the hibiscus branches are thin. When forming the crown, shoots growing parallel to the branches are cut off. When the central branch is cut off, then the lateral shoots develop into full-fledged stems. Only the buds located at the bottom can be left, and the central part is removed. If you want to make the crown lush, then select an area located one third above the leaf that faces outward and cut it off.
Dry branches need to be disposed of regularly.
In order for new buds to form and the number of young shoots to increase, when shoots appear, starting from the third generation, several buds are cut off, shortening the branches. Pruning is carried out both in spring and in autumn after abundant flowering. The plant tolerates all types of pruning well, so you can bring all your ideas to life.
How to prune hibiscus? The standard is popular. This appearance makes the hibiscus even more spectacular. Forming a standard at home with your own hands is not an easy task. But if you follow all the instructions and carry out competent care at home, then getting an exquisite standard tree with a straight trunk and a spherical crown is quite possible. Some professionals can create hibiscus bonsai - cute miniature trees.
Careful care at home is necessary to maintain aesthetic shape. As we said earlier, a haircut can be done at least once a year. To do this, the branches of the young plant are tied to tension devices. Their growth is directed with great care using wire.
When the branches grow a couple of tens of centimeters, they need to be cut off, leaving more than three leaves.
When a bonsai tree is formed, flowering may stop. Don't be upset, the flowers will appear later. In mature miniature bonsai-style trees, the shoots are shortened after flowering has ended.
Hibiscus propagation
Hibiscus and its propagation are of interest to many. The most asked question is which method is best. Chinese rose reproduces in 4 main ways:
- seeds;
- cuttings;
- layering;
- dividing the bush.
How to propagate Chinese rose? Which method is better for an amateur to choose?
The most popular of these methods is the second, since propagation of hibiscus by cuttings at home is the easiest. Cuttings quickly take root and grow well, while seeds take a long time to germinate, layering at home is difficult to implement, and often dividing a bush is harmful to the plant, and often impossible.
When is the best time to do this? As a rule, quite a lot of cuttings remain after pruning the plant. However, not all cut shoots are suitable for planting: you must ensure that the cutting has several buds and at least two internodes.
After cutting, you need to put the cuttings in water, cover with a glass jar and wait for them to take root. The shoot should be planted in the above loose soil mixture with the addition of peat. The optimal temperature for rapid rooting is +22…+25ºC. If the cuttings are planted in summer, it is recommended to cut off the upper part of the shoot.
It takes a long time for a Chinese rose cutting to take root: this requires at least a month. But after 2 months, with good care, the young plant can bloom.
To keep the bush lush, it is recommended to regularly pinch its top.
Possible errors and their prevention
It is worth paying attention to what mistakes you should not make when pruning the Chinese Rose:
- You should not perform this procedure during flowering, as this can greatly weaken the plant. If you urgently need to remove a diseased branch, then you will have to do it very carefully, without touching others, and be sure to treat the cut area afterwards.
- You cannot prune a flower in winter, when it is at rest, unnecessary processes may start.
- It is strictly forbidden to take poorly sharpened tools and make cuts with them - after all, you will end up with uneven, torn edges, which will not heal well, and the plant will immediately look sloppy.
Signs and superstitions
There are a lot of prejudices and beliefs around the Chinese rose. Some consider it the main reason for the divorce of spouses, others recommend purchasing a plant for a single woman to attract a man to the house.
Despite the dangerous signs, more and more people are purchasing a flower for their home. Believe it or not, it's up to everyone. But we can say with confidence that the Chinese rose will fit into any interior and decorate it. It will purify the air in the room and, with proper care, will delight your household for many years.
Types of pruning
Proper pruning of eastern hibiscus, cultivated in Russia as a houseplant, can be done in several ways.
Thus, professional flower growers practice:
- Pinching - this gentle method helps stimulate the growth of young hibiscus; When pruning in this way, you should not trim the entire shoot, but only its tip; In this way, you can shorten the strongest stems of a young plant, which will serve as the basis for the growth of numerous young branches, which will give it a neat shape later.
- Selective (complete) pruning of shoots - using this method it is possible to form a lush crown of a tree or bush; Hibiscus pruned on all sides produces young shoots at the beginning of the growing season.
- Corrective pruning - performed in the presence of diseased hibiscus branches; with pruned non-viable shoots, areas of pest infestation, dry foliage and dead branches are removed; pruning of branches is done to their living woody base, on which the plant will subsequently form young shoots.
- Heavy pruning is appropriate when a tree dies without responding to proper care - pest control, fertilizing; in this case, all damaged shoots and foliage are removed, leaving several viable buds directly at the root base, so that the growth of the hibiscus can be renewed due to the living, formed root system.
Why is pruning needed?
Pruning is one of the necessary conditions for growing Chinese roses indoors. In open ground, and even more so in natural conditions, such a need practically does not arise. However, sometimes hibiscus is pruned in parks, this allows the crown of the bush to be formed and given the required shape.
It is very rarely possible to create optimal lighting in an apartment; this causes curvature and deformation of hibiscus shoots.
And since decorativeness is the main property of this cultivated plant, crooked and unaesthetic shoots have to be removed. This procedure is not at all dangerous for the plant; the Chinese rose easily forms new shoots.
Pruning also allows you to rejuvenate the plant. Removing old shoots stimulates the growth of new ones, which gives the plant a renewed appearance, increasing its decorative value. In some cases, pruning allows you to get rid of diseased shoots; this is one of the effective ways to combat pests.
Pruning shoots can be done using simple household scissors.
One of the procedures that stimulates the flowering of Chinese roses is to remove “extra” roots. This is necessary when the planting capacity becomes small for the root system.
There are several types of pruning.
Formative. It is produced almost immediately after planting (transplanting) the hibiscus. It is necessary for the formation of the crown of a growing bush. The main task of such pruning is to remove all deformed and damaged branches and shoots. It takes years to form and maintain the shape of the crown.
Formation of a trunk. This type of pruning is carried out when the plant has gained strength. This is also part of the crown formation process. With this type of pruning, all branched side shoots are removed. The main trunk is not pruned during this process. This is necessary in order to develop a trunk of sufficient height. The strongest shoots remain to form the crown.
Supportive. This pruning occurs in cases where the crown is formed. If such an operation is not carried out periodically, the plant may lose all decorative properties. If errors occur during the formation of the crown, they can be corrected by completely removing unnecessary branches.
Anti-aging pruning. This type of pruning, as the name suggests, is necessary to rejuvenate the plant. Its essence is to remove old branches and shorten younger ones. This pruning stimulates the formation of new shoots, but which are always more likely to set buds. This pruning is total in nature and, unlike formative procedures, affects absolutely all shoots.
Hygienic. This type of pruning aims to remove all unhealthy, dry and old shoots. It is most justified to carry it out before the new flowering cycle, in February-March. This pruning frees up space for future flowers, reminiscent of thinning.
All of the above types of pruning can be carried out simultaneously in one operation. Most often, gardeners do just this; this can significantly reduce stress for the plant. The best time for pruning can be considered early spring. Formative pruning is often carried out in the fall after the hibiscus has finished flowering, this allows you to correct all the flaws of previous prunings. Also at this time, diseased or dried shoots are identified.
Step-by-step instruction
To prune to form a bush:
- First, we prepare the tools: a knife and scissors (necessarily sharp and disinfected) and charcoal (powdered) for processing the cuts.
- We determine for ourselves the desired shape and approximate height of the bush.
- Then you need to cut off those shoots that are parallel to the branches; when the central stem is cut off (thereby freeing up space for the growth of the side ones), the side branches turn into real full-fledged stems.
- Next, you need to periodically trim to maintain the desired shape of all branches.
To make the Chinese rose lush:
- This type of pruning is very simple; you need to shorten absolutely all branches (preferably in spring and autumn) by 1/3 of the length above the leaf (or bud) that is turned outward.
- You can also pinch or selectively trim some branches in the summer to improve the plant's fullness.
When is the best time to prune?
The optimal pruning periods are spring and autumn.
In the fall, this can be done after flowering has stopped. In the spring, it is very important not to miss the moment and carry out the procedure before the flower buds open. If you prune at the wrong time and expose young shoots to it, flowering may not occur.
New buds form only on young shoots. The time of active growth and flowering (from April to September) is absolutely not acceptable for pruning.
The beginning of winter (December) is the transition of the plant to the dormant stage; pruning at this time can provoke the formation of shoots, which is undesirable, as it will weaken the plant preparing for a new flowering. Pruning during the flowering period is also undesirable. This is an extreme measure, the need for which can be justified to save the plant from any pests.
Chinese rose pruning procedure
Before carrying out the pruning procedure, you need to decide on the final result that you would like to obtain (size and shape). At the owner’s request, hibiscus can be used to make either a small tree or a spreading flowering shrub, which can easily be placed on the windowsill. To form a tree, lateral shoots from the second generation are removed. At the same time, several central shoots are left. The upper part is carefully shortened by several buds. This will form the future crown of your tree.
Crown formation
To form a bush, the central branch of the rose is cut off, which allows the lateral shoots to gradually develop into full-fledged stems. Several lower buds are left, and the central part is removed.
The plant tolerates the pruning procedure very well, so you can safely conduct experiments and implement your most interesting design ideas. There were cases when the above-ground part of the plant practically died, and the rose was reborn from underground buds.
After you have decorated the upper crown of the plant, the further process of pruning the Chinese rose will consist of the gradual removal of branches that grow parallel to the central trunk and deep into the crown of the plant. If they are not trimmed, it will interfere with the formation of a beautiful appearance. They also require additional nutrition and strength of the plant during its development.
Subsequently, when shoots of the third and subsequent generations appear, the Chinese rose is shortened by several buds. This procedure promotes the development of a larger number of young shoots, on which a significant number of new buds will form.
Trimming
It is important to prune Chinese roses correctly even after the end of the flowering period. Often this procedure is carried out in the fall or early spring - until the plant begins to actively develop. If you do this at the end of spring, then the hibiscus may not bloom at all in the summer.
The pruning procedure is carried out using scissors, since the plant’s branches are too thin for a special garden tool.
It is very useful when replanting in spring or replacing soil to cut all branches to a length of fifteen centimeters from the root. In this case, a few centimeters are left from the buds and leaves. The upper part also needs to be trimmed to the place where the last branches grow from the main trunk. When new shoots form, the weakest ones are simply removed.
If indoor hibiscus has never been pruned before, then such a radical procedure will only benefit it.
The cuttings remaining after circumcision can be rooted and the rose can be propagated in this way.
By following all these recommendations, as a result you will receive abundant flowering of extraordinary beauty of your pet. The shape of the bush will be harmonious and correct, and the indoor rose will become a real decoration of your home and the pride of the owner.
Rules for successful pruning
- First you need to decide for what purpose the pruning is carried out and in what way it will be carried out. The formation of flowers in Chinese roses occurs at the tops of the stems. When the branches are pruned, the tree begins to bush more and produces more flowers. The plant is pruned in early spring; hibiscus can be trimmed a little in the fall.
- Pruning tools must be clean and very sharp. Poorly sharpened scissors and knives make the cut torn, worsen the appearance of the plant, and cut branches will take a long time to heal. Before each pruning procedure, tools are not only washed, but also disinfected. It is best to use alcohol for disinfection.
- It is best to prune hibiscus after transplantation, in spring or summer. After the procedures, caring for the rose remains the same.
- Even before you start pruning, you need to decide what shape you need. All cuts must be made at an angle of 45 degrees. Caring for a rose immediately after pruning, in order to avoid infection of the Chinese rose and for faster healing of wounds, includes sprinkling all cuts with crushed charcoal. You can use charcoal or activated carbon.
- The top of the plant is trimmed, moving away from the place where the last upper branches grow. The shoots are shortened a second time when the plant finishes flowering.
- The main rule for pruning a Chinese rose is that you can trim no more than 2/3 of all branches.
Thanks to these rules, the plant will receive minimal injuries, which will heal quickly.
How to prune hibiscus
The most popular form of hibiscus, which has a very impressive appearance, is the standard.
Forming it at home is not so easy, and after the plant takes on the desired shape, regular care is required for the branches to maintain the standard shape of the crown. But if you follow the instructions, you can get an amazing standard Chinese rose tree.
- To obtain a standard form, choose a young hibiscus. Its central shoot must be straight. Then this shoot is tied to a reliable support at the same distance and is not removed until the trunk becomes strong and stable. Growing side shoots are periodically removed.
- When the plant reaches the required height, the top of the plant is pinched. This is done to stimulate the growth of side shoots.
- After removing the top, the hibiscus will begin to actively branch. Therefore, the side branches are shortened and pinched monthly. This measure will promote the growth of dormant buds and the growth of new shoots.
- All lower shoots continue to be removed, but the upper ones are not touched. Over time, the plant will acquire the desired spherical shape.
To maintain a neat decorative shape at home, careful care is required. Hibiscus is periodically trimmed, preventing the crown from growing. The haircut is done once a year in the autumn months. If you do this at another time, the hibiscus will not bloom.
You can try growing a bonsai-style tree from hibiscus. But the formation of a Chinese rose for such a plant is very difficult and time-consuming. Professional florists can produce beautiful trees decorated with many flowers.
Such plants will look very impressive and unusual in the interior. The main problem when forming a bonsai is that the hibiscus branches quickly become thick and woody.
To form a bonsai, you need to take a young plant. Its branches are tied to supports and tension devices
You need to guide their growth very carefully; this can be done using wire
When a young plant begins to form, this may affect flowering, but for the sake of a beautiful, well-groomed form, it is worth waiting for the flowers to appear. In trees that are already formed in the bonsai style, the shoots are shortened after flowering ends.
Chinese roses withstand the procedure of pruning and shaping fairly well, so special care for them after the work is not needed. All fertilizing and watering are done as usual.
You should not be afraid to radically trim and thin out your hibiscus; on the contrary, by getting rid of old and unnecessary branches, the plant receives more nutrition for the formation of flowers and the growth of new strong shoots. Proper formation of the plant's crown will make the hibiscus the main decoration of your home or greenhouse.
What will happen if the procedure is carried out?
Important! Some owners of this gorgeous plant, to put it mildly, “regret” cutting it off. In the end, of course, they only make things worse for him. Without the necessary surgery, the Chinese Rose will not be able to form beautifully, not to mention its size.
The bush will begin to grow as it wants - more in one direction, less in the other, and the leaves become less and less, without pruning the branches become bare. Shoots can also become deformed; if they are not shortened, then, accordingly, the appearance of the plant does not change for the better.
Flowering will be weak - there will be isolated flowers here and there, or even none at all. Pruning is required!
Where can you keep a Chinese rose in your home?
According to Feng Shui, the only rose that should not be kept at home is the Chinese rose, as it has the ability to absorb energy
It’s up to you to believe it or not, but if you don’t believe in omens and, no matter what, you want to grow a Chinese rose in your home, who can stop you from doing so? Take precautions and do not keep the Chinese rose in the bedroom or in the nursery, but place this large plant in the living room, where it will not become a hindrance, but, on the contrary, will serve as an excellent decorative element and purify the air in your home, absorbing harmful impurities from it and filling with oxygen

Aftercare
The Chinese rose does not have any special care requirements after pruning. The branches that survive the procedure quickly and painlessly go through a period of adaptation and simultaneously form several new shoots, which, in turn, can be pruned after three months.
To maintain the comfortable state of the flower, you just need to be responsible in observing the light and temperature regimes recommended for this plant, and also not violate the frequency of watering.
Care after haircut
After the pruning procedure, the hibiscus needs to create optimal conditions.
Watering
It is necessary to water the plant so that the soil dries out only at the very top. Even in winter, watering roses cannot be stopped.
Hibiscus does not like too dry air. To make it moist, you can place a vessel with water in the room.
Rose leaves should be periodically washed in the shower to remove accumulated dust. During the period of active flower growth, the air temperature in the room should be at least 20 degrees, and in winter not lower than 16 degrees.
It is best to place a container with a flower in a room with windows facing west or east. If the room is heavily illuminated by the sun, then it is better to shade the flower from direct rays. In summer you can take the plant outside.
Top dressing
You can make fertilizers for Chinese roses yourself from available materials - shells or tea bags. But it is better to use proven methods and buy more nutritious products, such as mullein, mineral mixtures, and chicken droppings.
Organic substances include: wood ash, bone meal, compost, humus. To avoid burning the hibiscus roots, chicken manure and mullein must first be diluted with water . It is necessary to carry out such events at the dacha.
Infusions contain potassium and nitrogen. But for phosphorus nutrition it is better to use other substances (bone meal or wood ash).
If you immediately add soil and ash to the soil, they will neutralize each other’s effects and become useless.
Mineral fertilizer for hibiscus should include phosphorus and potassium. If the flower asks for more, which will be visible from the leaves (they will become sluggish), then you can spray it with a urea solution. If the flowers come to life, it means it needs nitrogen and should be sprayed again.
Shelter for the winter
Young shoots of the flower must overwinter under cover, because frost resistance increases as they grow. One of the methods will create comfortable conditions for them:
- The bush is bent to the ground and covered with plastic film or other non-woven material.
- The rose is enclosed with a frame and insulated with material.
Tree varieties of roses cannot withstand severe frosts below eighteen degrees. Gardeners use the following methods on their plots:
- Cover with spruce branches or stems of other plants.
- A fence made of a wooden frame is installed and covered with non-woven insulation.
The spruce branches are placed near the bush in several layers. Snow will fall and reliably protect the plant from frost.
Covering hibiscus with other plants occurs in a vertical position. The material is tied in a bundle at the top and bottom. The result is a sheaf that will help save the rose from the cold.
The second method is to install a frame made of bars. The frame is covered with several layers of non-woven insulation. When spring comes and the frosts go away, the bush will need to be freed from insulation.
Hibiscus is an evergreen plant with colorful foliage. Even without flowers, it retains its decorative effect. If you follow all the rules for caring for it, you can enjoy luxurious flowering for several months in a row.
How to pinch hibiscus
Pinching young shoots will benefit the plant. It is advisable to carry out the procedure in early spring. First, the central shoot should be tied to a bamboo stick or some other solid object that will serve as a support. Next, let's work on thickening the trunk. To do this, we cut off all the shoots that grow on the side to the remaining 5 leaves.
The time has come for active fertilizing with nitrogen fertilizers. When the plant reaches the planned height, we pinch the top, leaving six leaves - this is how we form the crown. To get new branches, it needs to be pruned regularly. You should definitely get rid of young branches that are located parallel to the main bush.

Choosing an effective propagation method
The choice of propagation method depends on the type of hibiscus and the time of year.
Optimal time
A plant should be propagated when it:
- Absolutely great.
- The branch is bent towards the soil, which creates the possibility of division by layering.
- It has grown so much that you can cut off one cutting.
Hibiscus is propagated in spring and summer; if the flower is damaged by pests or is sick, then division should be postponed until the plant recovers.
Hibiscus is propagated using the following methods:
Cuttings
Can be used all year round, but best in spring and summer. Before pruning, the mother plant should be watered and pruned thoroughly. Along with the withered and limp shoots, cut off the cuttings (branches with a thick green stem and the presence of two internodes). Pick off all the leaves from this shoot and root the flower.
Layerings
No more difficult than the first method. To divide the bush, choose regular, air or vertical layering, the first is best. Sprinkle the selected branch with soil and leave the top open. In a place sprinkled with soil, roots will soon begin to grow. Before propagation, you need to prepare the soil: it must be well moistened, have high air permeability, and drainage is required. The branch that needs to be bent, cleared of leaves and placed in a dug hole in a flowerpot, if necessary, secured with wire so that it does not bend back. This method is applicable in the spring. Already in the fall, you can separate the shoot from the mother plant into a separate pot.
Seeds
The most uncommon and complex method. Moreover, all varietal characteristics of hibiscus are lost. The procedure is as follows:
- soak the seeds in water with growth stimulants;
- put them in a wet gauze cloth and then in a plastic bag for three days, until roots take root;
- plant in a pot with soil and humus;
- Do not deepen the seeds too much and cover the pot with a bag for thermal effect, after 2 weeks remove everything;
- Water moderately and after 3 months transplant the young hibiscus into a larger container.
Dividing the bush
Used in spring and summer. Secateurs, a knife and a spatula must be treated with a disinfectant and the bush must be dug up. Next, clean the root system from the soil, being careful not to damage it. Using a treated knife, cut off 2-3 stems with roots. Afterwards, plant each separated shoot in its own pot, where soil with humus is poured. New flowers should be watered often, but in moderation.
How to root
There are only two ways to root a Chinese rose.
In soil:
- Before planting in the ground, you need to wait until the cuttings give their own roots, lower them into a small glass with soil and sand, before dipping each shoot in a heteroauxin solution.
- After planting, lightly compact the soil at the base; the cuttings take root after a month.
- Build a small greenhouse around the plant in the form of a bag or a piece of glass to keep it warm and humid inside.
In water:
- Use a dark glass glass and pour warm water into it.
- Add a few tablets of activated carbon and a growth stimulator.
- Place the glass in a well-lit place, but out of direct rays.
- Plant in a pot only after the plant produces two or three leaves and the roots reach 5-7 centimeters in length.
Possible problems and difficulties after division
New shoots need to be watered daily, monitored for high humidity and moderate temperatures. If a young red rose is not provided with proper care, it will quickly shed its leaves and begin to wither. To avoid the appearance of mites and aphids, it is advisable to wash the plant with soapy water and wipe with a wet cloth in the shower. If the leaves turn yellow, you need to reconsider the applied mineral fertilizers - add nitrogen and iron and reduce chlorine and calcium.

Hibiscus is a popular indoor and greenhouse plant from the extensive Malvaceae family. This flower has several names: Chinese rose, Sudanese rose, Egyptian rose, hibiscus. In Europe, the first hibiscus, according to legend, appeared thanks to Charlemagne, who was supposedly a big fan of hibiscus tea. In Russia, the shrub form of the plant has been known since the 19th century; the plant quickly gained popularity and began to be called by an unusual name - rozan. It was loved by many, and its name even became entrenched in folklore.
Caring for a Chinese rose or how to achieve long-term flowering?
The plant loves a bright place, protected from direct sunlight. Hibiscus will not bloom in the shade. In the warm season, it feels great outdoors, so the bush can be placed on the balcony or in the garden. A place for this should be chosen that is protected from the scorching sun and drafts.
Air temperature and humidity
In summer, the hibiscus plant grows and blooms well at air temperatures from +18 to +25 degrees. In winter, the temperature should not be lower than +15 degrees, but home roses cannot tolerate heat either. At low temperatures, the plant may begin to shed its leaves.
Chinese rose loves high air humidity. Therefore, during hot periods and in winter, when the heating is on, hibiscus leaves must be sprayed regularly. Once a month, and if possible more often, it is recommended to bathe the bush under a warm shower. During this procedure, dust and possible pests (for example, spider mites) will be washed off the leaves, and the plant itself will be saturated with a sufficient amount of moisture. A pot of soil should be wrapped in cellophane before bathing.
Chinese rose - watering and fertilizing
Hibiscus love abundant watering, especially during flowering and active growth. But they should be watered only after the top layer of soil has dried. Constant waterlogging of the soil can lead to the development of fungal diseases and root rotting. Insufficient watering, especially in hot weather, domestic Chinese roses do not tolerate well and begin to shed leaves and buds.
The plant should be fed from March until the end of flowering. To do this, you can use the following complex fertilizers:
During the period of budding and flowering, the bushes should be fed every two weeks with fertilizers with an increased dose of potassium and phosphorus.
Fertilizers should be applied only after watering the soil, otherwise the roots of the plant may receive a chemical burn.
Hibiscus - replanting and pruning
Young plants are transplanted into larger diameter pots annually. Adult bushes should be replanted only after the root system becomes crowded in the old flowerpot. For replanting, you can buy special soil at a flower shop or prepare a mixture of the following components:
· peat soil – 1 part;
· humus – 0.5 parts;
· leaf soil – 1 part;
· turf soil – 1 part;
· sand – 0.5 parts.
Drainage (expanded clay, clay cuttings or broken brick) should be placed at the bottom of the pot.
Many people do not know how to transplant a Chinese rose without damaging the roots. To do this, it is recommended to use the transshipment method. Having carefully taken out the bush from the old pot, it is transferred and placed in a new pot prepared in advance.
When and how to prune a Chinese rose
- one of the main questions for beginning flower growers. The purpose of pruning is to form a lush bush and increase the number of flowering shoots. Therefore, pruning is done before transplanting the plant in the spring:
1. Bare, elongated and dried shoots are removed.
2. Healthy branches are shortened by half.
3. To prevent juice from leaking from the wounds, the cut areas are treated with garden varnish.
4. When rejuvenating an adult bush, all branches are cut to 15 cm. In this case, at least one bud should remain on the shoot.
5. When new shoots begin to grow, weak ones must be removed.
6. In summer, the bush is pruned again. As a result, buds will appear on the old but renewed plant in the fall, and it will delight you with its flowering until spring.
Care rules for indoor hibiscus to bloom
To generally characterize the conditions that need to be created for the Chinese rose to grow faster and bloom annually - these are high humidity, bright light, but not direct sunlight, moist soil.
Caring for Chinese roses depends on the variety. Those specimens that were purchased in the supermarket take root worse. They are stuffed with growth stimulants, fertilizers, and antifungal drugs.
As soon as the flower gets into home conditions, it begins to wither, since its immunity was maintained artificially. Therefore, it will take more time to accustom the plant to the usual regime of growth, fertilizing and watering.
Watering
The plant is tropical, so air and soil humidity must be maintained constantly. Chinese rose absorbs moisture both with its roots and leaves, so some varieties grow very luxuriantly: to increase the area of contact of the leaf plates with moisture. This is typical for all tropical species.
Watering is carried out in hot weather so that the water does not stagnate in the pan. If the top layer of soil dries out, moisten it, trying to keep the entire lump of earth around the root system moist. In autumn after flowering and in winter, the amount of liquid is reduced.
The flower loves spraying or sprinkling. To do this, take it outside in the summer, cover the soil in the pot with film and wash the leaves. You cannot leave the plant in the sun after this procedure - burns will appear. You cannot spray buds or open flowers - they darken and fall off.
Feeding
Feeding differs depending on the growing season:
In spring, it is necessary to apply nitrogen fertilizers with the addition of iron and copper to prevent leaf chlorosis.
Before setting buds, the plant consumes large quantities of phosphorus and potassium. Potassium-phosphorus mineral mixtures are suitable.
Fertilizing is applied 2-3 times a month in spring and summer, and in winter you can water with solutions once a month. It is also necessary to add organic matter to the soil to stimulate the growth of soil microflora. This affects the plant’s immunity and helps it not get sick. Solutions of mullein, chicken droppings, as well as purchased humic fertilizers are suitable.
Replanting and pruning
Mostly young plants are replanted so that they grow their crown. Until the age of five, annually, then once every 3 years, increasing the volume of the pot. In terms of pruning, you need to take precautions: after severely shortening the shoots, the Chinese rose can direct all its strength and nutrients to the formation of new branches, but it will not bloom this year. Pruning is done after flowering.
Video: Hibiscus - secrets of care
Growing Temperature
During the growing season, Chinese hibiscus can withstand temperatures up to 30 degrees indoors. The optimal temperature is from 18 to 25. After flowering, the plant is moved to a cooler place. If this is not the case in the apartment, the flower will overwinter under normal conditions.
Lighting
Lighting for hibiscus (Chinese rose) must be selected very carefully. Direct sunlight is contraindicated for it, but bright light is a condition for lush flowering. It cannot be placed in the shade.
Plant propagation by cuttings
The question of how to propagate hibiscus is of particular interest to novice gardeners. The twigs that are left after the spring pruning of indoor “roses” are suitable for this.
In this case, it is necessary to adhere to the following technology:
- Take a semi-lignified cutting of a plant about 15 cm long with 4 internodes. The cut from below should be oblique and straight from above.
- Remove the bottom 2 leaves and cut the rest by ½.
- Place the bottom of the cutting for 2 - 3 hours in the Epin solution or dip it in the root former.
- Pour loose soil into seedling containers. To do this, you can mix an equal amount of garden soil, sand and peat. It is advisable to add a little bone meal to the soil.
- Water the ground.
- Plant a plant.
Place a transparent plastic bag on top of it to maintain temperature and water balance.
Plant propagated by cuttings
You need to make sure that there is no excess moisture on the bag. During rooting, the temperature should be above +24 °C. In a month, the hibiscus will produce its own roots.
You can try another rooting method. To do this, place the cutting in water with activated carbon, poured into an opaque container.
After a 0.5 cm root appears, the future plant should be transplanted into a pot.
Hibiscus can, of course, be grown from seeds. Then he will delight his owner with the first flowers only in the fourth year of life. A plant grown from a cutting will bloom next summer.
Using the theoretical knowledge gained from this article for practical purposes will help decorate your flower collection with beautiful hibiscus.
Features of care
When growing hibiscus, first of all, you need to take care of a sufficiently capacious container for the flower. In Russian villages, as a rule, a medium-sized tub was selected for roses. Needing light, this plant, however, does not like direct sunlight. Caring for hibiscus is quite simple, which is what has earned it such wide popularity. One of the prerequisites is frequent, but not very abundant watering.
If all maintenance conditions are met, the rose will bloom in early spring. A special feature of hibiscus is its long flowering period (from March to November). It should be mentioned that even in winter, hibiscus remains a rather attractive plant. Providing satisfactory growing conditions can allow it to grow at home for a very long time. In botanical gardens, the plant can exist for at least 100 years.
